v640-q760 in May
Hey guys !
Finally am done with the GRE, though not a very good score, yet, a satisfactory one for me. The universities that I am going for are GeorgiaTech and VirginiaTech and will be applying for MS(Computer Science) with majors in Graphics. Have done my BS in the same field with a CGPA 3.74/4.00. What do u guys think are my chances of getting in those universities. Also any suggestions regarding the universities who have good Graphics faculty. Regards. |

Re: v640-q760 in May
Hey !
The first section was the AWA. The topic for my essay was regarding involvement of parents in schools and the critical analysis was about some stupid girli cream. But both of them were pretty easy and i hope i did well in them. The next section was Quantitative. During my prep, using Big Book and PowerPrep, I mostly used to score 790 in Quantitative. But unfortunately the questions in Real GRE, though of the same level of difficulty, required much more calculations. I remember one of the questions was regarding percentages and the values were pretty big + absurd. I spent a lot of time on this question, as I kept on making stupid mistakes while multiplying the number to get the percentage . So my advise; a) do not waste too much of time on any one question, b) Try to stay as cool n calm as you possibly can. Neway in the end I ran outta time and had to rush through the last 4-5 questions. Guess thats where I lost those points ![]() The verbal went pretty OK. Although my average score on BigBook was around 670, 690 in PowerPrep Test1 and 490 in PowerPrep Test2 ( This one I took the day before the actual GRE )but as I said, no regrets .Well guess thats all about my GRE. Also another piece of advise for preparation. I crammed almost 95 % of Barrons. But trust me that didn't help me boost my Verbal score. Instead what helps you get a good score is Good Vocab + Reading abilities. I will suggest the test takes to read Economist + National Geographic + classical literature (Oscal Wilde, Guy De Mau Passant, Jane Austin, Thomas Hardy ..... ) . Trust me guys that will boost ur score in a way, even you wouldn't have expected. Well thats all i guess ..... Have fun with ur GRE !!!!! Regards. |

First of all heartiest congrats on such a good score. I just wish I had better score on Quant . Anyway here's a list of universities ( Computer Science based ranking ) http://www.vyomworld.com/gre/cslist.asp I will suggest, as am gonna do myself, to target 2 universities from the top 10 and 3 universities ranking from 11 to 40. Good luck with your application. Quote:
I also recieved a personal message from indienne. He wished that I reply publicly so here it goes Quote:
Yes I mentioned that reading Economist, National Geographic + Literature. I have been a fan of National Geographic and Literature for almost 5-6 years now. Though my memory is so screwed up, that I seldom get to remember the meanings of the new words being encountered . The Economist I read only in last two months. During this span of time I read almost 20 of these weeklies. I didnt use to read each and every story in it, but only the essays that used to interest me. Also the editorials are a must to read. They give hell lot of ideas on how to criticize ( will help you in your analysis of statement and critique writing). National Geographic, will definitely help those people who find scientific passages for RC, difficult to comprehend. The classical literature is the best example of sentence construction as found on the GRE. It will help you to better judge the tone of the author, in your sentence completion questions. Also its one of the best ways to build your vocabulary ( Trust me for most of the people it is, though didnt work for me that way ) Yes there were words in the test, that were not from Barron's. Yet 90 - 95 % of the words were from Barron. I will not suggest anyone to cram words other than those given in Barron. They are enough to help you score around 700. Instead I will suggest that practice taking as much tests as possible for you. Practicing & Reading helps more than just cramming Word Lists. Regards. |
