Q800 :) V660 :(
There... its finally over!! Thanks so much, everyone at TM!! I joined the forum only about a month ago, but its helped me a lot.
I'm thinking of applying for an MS in Comp Sc. Do you think my Verbal's too low? Also, what kind of universities would I get admission into? Will send you a detailed post on my experience soon. Archana |

Archana, your Q+V score is pretty good. IMO it should more than suffice for application to an MS in Comp. Sci. AFAIK you should be able to get admission in a decent university (ranked between 20-50) if you have a strong portfolio. I dunno about financial aid though, competition for funding is brutal in your stream.

Thanks so much!! I was contemplating taking the GRE again, but everyone I know who's been taking it here, seem to have done comparatively worse, so i'm not sure if its worth taking the risk. Maybe it would be worth doing the GRE subject.
Its weird. I'm not sure if anyone has an explanation for this: I'm from India and most of the people I know(classmates, etc) who have taken the GRE in June have got scores in the 1000-1300 range. I even heard a 900 which was unheard of. Has anyone else heard of a score range like this ? Does this have any effect on the percentile? Here's my experience: My preparation for the GRE started about 6-8 months ago, but it reached its peak, only during the last one month. Quants: I'm from an engineering background and math wasnt too much of a problem. I started with the Barron's review and then did the Power Prep math review. PP covers most of the topics. As for practice, did all the sums on the PP CD, Barron's and then identified my weak areas. These turned out to be probability, permutations etc. Worked out most of the sums on the forum... Thanks, ish, Dinesh, Brindha, arjensteve, Holden, mallelac- whether or not you were aware of it, your problems & solutions helped me a great deal!! At the test, most of the questions were based on the PP material, however I must say that they're not as direct. there's a little more thinking involved and you could go wrong if you're not careful. Surprising I was careful, because usually, I'm the one who makes the most "silly" mistakes.. Verbal: The last 6-8 months I've been doing Vocabulary books (vocab books), reading classics, etc. The last one month I decided to quit this and focus on the exam. Although I'm a native English speaker, most of the GRE words were foreign to me. I started with the Barron's wordlist. Since I was short of time, I followed this technique (Hottest Technique for vocab Building " array technique")-thanks Calm_J, it really helped. Also, www.aldaily.com helped a lot for improving my reading skills. After Barron's took a lot of practice tests, did more vocab and that was basically it. I think I screwed up on the RCs, and that too on one of my early questions, so it just reiterates the importance of the first few questions. Another tip that really helps Thats about it I guess.. If you have any specific questions let me know. Good luck! Archana Thanks ish, Illusionz, manasi4gre, aks.. aks: Most of the words were from Barrons. I actually even found a few analogies, antonyms that I had seen earlier. As far as quants goes, I guess the concepts were from the PP math review, its just the application that was tricky. Also I forgot to mention one thing. I would seriously advice everyone taking the GRE to stick to ETS prep material for practice... This would include the big book(ish, thanks for the site!), PP, I guess Taking the GRE (though I didnt use it) and the Korean 10 test material available at testsgre@yahoo . It provides a much better idea of your standing on the GRE, than prep companies. I'll try and upload some of my material, soon. |

Word Power made easy is an ok book... it has good words, but I'm not sure if you'll have enough time to work with it. It has a lot of exercises. Personally, I didnt use it.
However, you could read All About Words and How to build a Better Vocabulary by Nurnberg and Rosenblum. These two books are really good, and they have a lot of stories about words, that you can even read when you're trying to relax(I know it sounds funny, but trust me, its fun reading about the Spartans, the Greeks who ostracized outcasts and Achilles and his heel!). I used these earlier, but never managed to make myself thorough with any book. With three months, you could really get down to the Barrons full time.... That should give you enough time for practice tests. Good luck Archana |

Congratulations Archana, that's a great score! I think that's good enough for an admission to a reputed institute. Thank you so much for the suggestions. How was AWA?

Thanks Sam! The AWA wasnt too bad, though I got a topic pertaining to the arts. I hate writing about arts, as I've been pretty much immersed in science for quite a while, and I cant seem to relate to the arts that easily- if you know what I mean...
I did ok, and I should make it to (hopefully) a 4.5 on the Issue, a 5.0 on the argument ...I had just about enough time for my essays, cross-checking and all. I should say that I found this method extremely useful (Best way of approaching AWA???)!! (Thanks Dingus!) Good luck! Archana |
