Hi I have just finished GRE. It was the worst experience of my life.
Although Just one night before the test I scored 1190 in Power Prep and was expecting 1250+ in real GRE. Also questions from Verbal section looked good to me I got only 370 in this section and Q = 620. I am aiming for M.S in computer science. Is this score sufficient for getting admit to any good US university (among top 100). Please advice how can i improve my Quant score. I had practiced Barron and Big Book. Shall I retake the exam ??? Please advice please. |

You take it once a CALENDAR month. So you can take it November 31st and then December 1st.
I would suggest downloading all the software you can; it's all on the internet. The Barron's CD, the Kaplan CD, the Princeton Review CD. If you don't feel like breaking the law, you can buy it all in Barnes and Noble or something. All of these have computer-adaptive tests, and they will help you prepare for the math. Skim the Barron's book if you wish, but going for graduate school for computer science you SHOULD certainly know all the math in it. For the verbal, I cannot give you any advice other than to memorize words. There is really no other way to get a good verbal score; all it tests is your vocabulary. I didn't care about the verbal, didn't prepare for it for a second, and didn't even take the section too seriously when I was taking the real test (had 12 minutes left when I finished). Good luck. |

Rahul-,
you gotta identify your mistakes and change your strategies, otherwise there is a chance that you get the same old score again. Since you gave the GRE once, you can use their free online basic diagnostic service, which I heard is very useful in identifying one's mistakes. Go thru this forum about "How to prepare for GRE" Also for verbal....Be sure to go thru P,Q,R,S,T,V -Bcoz I see most of the antronyms appearing last or of higher difficulty level are from those. Perfect your Root words list. I would prefer you go thru 501 series-RC,SC and word group lists. LEARN BY GIVING TESTS DAILY-Since you have less time--give atleast 1verb and 1 quant-test a day and identify where you are going wrong. For quant-Practice,practice and practice-All types of Qs. You have plenty of resources available on the web.Make use of them. but remeber that Success is one step beyond Failure |

Yes, definitely retake. Don't do it by just taking tests every day...work on individual practice questions, one type at a time. That way, you can pick up on your patterns of errors.
Can you take a prep class like Princeton Review? That would probably help you the most. 10 days is not enough time to raise your score sufficiently. You need to raise verbal too, esp if you need to get a visa. Are you in the U.S.? And I didn't think you could retake that quickly either, but I wouldn't. Give it at least a month, if not more. |
