(1040) GRE Score (610 Quant and 430 Verbal)

I just finished taking the GRE, or I should say, the GRE just finished taking me.

Obviously I will need to re-take the exam again and after taking the exam, the thought is very daunting.

    Verbal:
Before viewing my score, I thought I had done fairly well on this section. There was only 1 word in the Analogy and Antonym Section that I didn't know. I think my fate was determined on the Reading Passages and maybe the Sentence Completions, but you don't get to review, so if I had to guess, I think the Reading Comprehension is what did me in.
Similar to what has been discussed before, if you somehow find a way to read and comprehend abstruse material quickly, the RCs should not be that big of a deal.

    Quant:
I think I did extremely horrible on this section. First, I got 2 Sections (mods please feel free to delete this if I am not suppose to talk about this) and I still do not know which one was real and which was fake. I know one was definately easier than the other.

One of the more underrated aspects of taking the GRE is the exhaustion it can cause. I took only 1 bathroom break and that was while I was still on the clock because I finished one of my writing tasks early. I think everything would have been fine but after taking all 3 sections, I thought I was finished but I had another Quant Section and that was extremely depressing.

Overall, I thought the test was difficult and of course my score reflex it.

    Hey Mick,

    What was your target score?

1000 is the average for most master's programs. I'm not sure what school your targeting, but I would find out how you rank before you get too discouraged.

I think it is critical to take a 4 or 5 full length practice exams before the real thing. This is really the only way to build stamina for the test.

Also, I think you should save one of the power preps for the final phase of your prep. If you save one, you will get a accurate reflection of what you will get on the test.

It sounds like you know what you did wrong on the verbal. You need to increase your reading comp abiities.

610 is pretty good for quant. I'm not sure how high you were aiming for.

You can re-schedule in a month...do you think you'll be ready?

Sorry to hear you had such an unfortunate experience Mick,as echoed above I guess the RC's did you in,however I am puzzled by your quantitative score. What was so difficult about it ?

I know you can retake the exam in a months time, however I would advice you to first wait for the results and see where you messed up and then work on those weak area's and then take your exam again.

Do they actually send you the copy of your test? I didn't know that.

As for the Quant, I honestly don't know because I don't know which section was the real Quant Section. The very first section was not that hard, but my mind was alot clearer. After taking it, I elected to forego my 10-minute break and go to the Verbal because I figured I only had it left and the test would be over. My mind was totally gone and I was pretty exhausted after the Verbal and if the 2nd Quant was the real one, I know exactly why my score was so low as some of it I had to guess on because I just didn't have any stamina left and just wanted the test to be over towards the end.

I just don't understand why ETS has to thrown in an "expirimental section".

The 2nd Quant seemed to have alot of number theory, word problems and coordinate geometry.

Also, I think people will do fine on the Verbal just by studying Barron's. As stated earlier, the Ants and Analogies were not that tough, but I may have been getting softballs because I was bombing on the other part of it. The Sentence Completions didn't not see that hard as well. The RC was definately troublesome but to be honest the Powerprep Passages give an extremely accurate view of what is on the real test.

I know someone was saying that the RCs were real long but the passages I got were comparable to what was on Powerprep. However they were very boring and the questions being asked about them were somewhat confusing.

When taking Powerprep again, I am going to try and see if I can figure out how much the RCs count. It seems like they are weighted very heavily or maybe because I got them in the first 10 questions and got them wrong. Never would I have imagined getting a 430 .

    I was aiming for about a 1300.

I thought the AWA and the Quant would be my biggest weakness. One of the schools I want to apply to wants a 1200 but I have not researched it to be honest with you, I just did a google search but that score was for another Master's Program then the one I want to get into.

Yeah, I may invest in some Speed Reading Seminars and also read more. I didn't think the RCs were that difficult but my mind did wonder quite a bit and I found myself having to re-read alot of the material, especially on the last two. I got 3 RC passages (I think the most I got on Powerprep was 2) and on the longest one, it seemed like I got asked at least 4-5 questions on it.

Yeah, I would have been content with the 610 on the Quant had my verbal been comparable. However, if the first Quant Section I got was the REAL section, I can absolutely make a higher score. However, if the second Quant was the REAL one, than it will definately be troublesome as it was extremely difficult, although I think alot of folks on this board could pass it but suffice it to say, things are always different under timed conditions and having to take the test all at once.

Well thats really unfortunate that your real section had to be the one which went bad.

What I understand is when you get the hard copy of your results, then it mentions how much time you spent on each question along with the question number and the category it falls under (for example probability).

That can give you a idea of your weak areas and you can focus on them instead of stabbing in the dark

Don't lose heart,I know it seems daunting to do it again ,but the bright side you wont have to go through those bugging word lists again and you will be improving on your existing mathematical skills. However check with the schools you wish to apply for whether they average your scores or they take the latest ones.

really disappointing.i thought you would get a good score like 1300+.i can feel your mental situation at this time.in my exam i also got an experimental quant section and unfortunately it was the first section after completing the AWA.i was totally messed up with that quant part.i was ready to cancel my exam, however i completed my exam.frankly speaking, the experimental quant section made me mad.i think it is a trick from the ets.they want to see how the test takers bear the stress in the timed condition.

from my experience here in the forrum,i think mick, never mind, you were not fully prepared for the exam, specially for the quant section like me.perhaps you needed some extra care for the quant section.you were good in perm, comb and probability questions but you had some deficit in conception in the other parts.i want say you one thing first gather as much as conception you cant then try to solve as much as problems as you can.the first priority will be gathering conception.

i think Official Guide for gmat may be a great gre quant stuff as previously oldman recommended.you can collect it from esnips.it has a huge collection of 450 problem solving questions.if you complete the questions with clear conception you will be very soon a math whiz.believe me.you can also download the gmat powerprep software.it also a great stuff.

    good luck.

Skawal, how do you know which Quant Section was real? Did you receive something from ETS or did you know when you were taking the test?

At this point, I still do not know which Quant Section was the real one. I just know the 2nd one was way harder than the first one.

actually it was my assumption.i did pretty bad in the first quant section.as i recall i answered at best 10-15 questions correctly and other questions are so hard that i had to go on with guessing.the next quant section was not so hard as the first one.as i was stressed at the first section, i also messed up with the second quant part.but comparatively did well to that of the first quant section and got a bad quant score 670.

for your second query,i have no idea about that.i am waiting for the awa score.we the test takers i bangladesh have to wait at least two months for the awa score.
