I would say that you should just go ahead and start memorizing, instead of looking for easier ways. However, to make the process a little simpler, I offer these bits of advice.

1. Make your own flashcards. Don't buy the ones that are commercially available. Your personalized ones will obviously be better suited to your needs. Moreover, with flashcards, you have the ability to shuffle them. This will ensure that you don't remember the words because of the words preceding or following them. For instance, I made my flashcards on the computer and downloaded them onto my TI-89 calculator.

2. Try learning the roots of words if that helps. I never did do that because I could guess the meaning of most words based on the words that I DID know. But to each his own.

3. Try to understand the context in which the words are used. By putting them in sentences, not only will you remember the words better, but it will help you in SCs too.

4. READ! I cannot emphasize this enough. Reading will definitely improve your vocabulary. Focus on the editorial sections in major English newspapers.

5. Listen to other test-takers' advice too. In the past few weeks, Oink and Jeanette have had great verbal scores. So, maybe they could help you out as well.
