congrats, Tuxedo!

well, as many test-takers I thought that listening comprehension would be the hardest part. the powerprep TOEFL disk I got just a couple of days before the exam provided me with some kind of scary experince since speakers there were really fast and twas difficult to understand them. however, the actual listening happened to be a bit easier. bisedes the powerprep disk I got some kind of cracked version of the TOEFL exam which I bought from hands. it was helpful, but I didnt know that their scores were different from the actual one (i mean the very score system ot smth). I felt ok getting 230 - 270 on those cracked tests, but once I got 330.... unfortunately it was just before the exam and I was very dissappionted - I wasnt sure how to interpret those scores, and I thought they were completely wrong since its not possible to get more than 300. that was when I received the powerprep disk and tried it - as I told it was really helpful. another difficulty was an essay... the only thing I can advise is to practice a lot. in fact almost all essay question could be answered using a common pattern, and once you practice a bit essay writing will not be mystery anymore. I could post some of them if anybody is interested. I also had official guide to TOEFL - quite an old edition, but its grammar section is perfect. and lot of practice, looooot of practice. I did every single task in Official Guide. btw, there were several full-length tests in Official Guide and they are cool since they are harder than the cbt. and their listening section (i had audio cassetts) is terrible
hello tuxedo ??
can you tell me what was your listenign score on the PowerPrep ???
I got a low score on that section , although the quality of the sound was very bad
I´m very concerned , I did not understand most of the talks and I was guessing most of the question . I know Im not that bad on this section I hope to improve in the real test.
congratulation , excellent scores !!
hey aoria,
i would like to help you and tell the exact number, but the problem is that I have re-installed windows several times since then, so all the scores were erased(( but I remember they were not too high - smth around 21 - and this disappointed me as I told. besides, those scores powerprep gives you are based on some system where the highest score you can get is less than 300 (actual TOEFL best score). so, cheer up a bit and keep practice. may be you sould get yourself some more material to practice at least to be sure you did all your best? good luck!
Tuxedo, I was having the same problem, the sound recordings in the listening section are crappy to say the least. I couldn't understand what speakers were saying. I did not have full confidence in myself to give the answer of all questions properly. On the other hand, I can understand most parts of listening are being displayed on E! on-line Entertainment channel and CNN news channel.
Tuxedo, I am getting score range like 20 in listening, 7-25 in Grammar and 20 in reading. Do you think my real score will almost be the same unless If I try to do practice more.
let me put my question this way - If I'm not getting target score in powerprep tests what's the probablity I won't get it in the real test (though I'm practicing alot).
hey, elearner,
cheer up! you may have already heard it thousand of times, but still - the probabilty of getting a good result depends on luck as well as on practice which however doesnt mean you shouldnt practice anymorebut still, to be on the safe side and be sure you did all you could - keep practicing and practice will pay you back!!! Frankly, the results PP gives on tests tend to be the closest to those you get on the actual test, so you must keep practicing. and listen, listen, listen. I practiced listening every day before the exam (about month or a bit longer). When are you planning the exam? And how long have you been practicing so far? May be your frastration is a bit exaggerated if you still have time?
