I am very mad at people that characterize as stupid/smart other persons/themselves based solely on a stupid and meaningless GRE score. Smartness/Stupidness cannot be judged until you get to know each person in depth, and certainly it cannot be measured by test scores. Other factors, such as organization, perseverence, modesty, responsiveness, honesty, effort, kindness, sincereness, and overall spirit are by far more important in evaluating one's intelligence!

You mean the message a hacker left on phpBB boards? Can you believe I'm here because of that message? It's funny. I've been doing some search on the Internet and I found another forum where people were talking about that message. Erin made some comments on that and I was impressed how well he spoke Portuguese. So, I decided to check his website out and BAM...here I am.Originally Posted by Dingus

Haha, now that is funny!
Yes, we're talking about the message the Brazilian hackers left. So did you see my comments here, on vBulletin.com, SitePoint.com, or another website? Just curious. As I recall, I commented on that in only three places. In the "forum world," that hack was pretty big news--phpbb.com is a very high profile site, one of the most visited in the world.

The forum was having an attachment problem, so I made a post in another forum asking for help (actually getting help, since I'm a paying customer there). Dingus found that post by accident.Originally Posted by bnm
Kind of a funny coincidence, IMO.

It was on SitePoint.com. I remember you explained very well what "a gente" meant. I think the hacker wrote "agente" and it's wrong..well, if you see how Brazilians write Portuguese on the Internet, you won't understand a word. It's very sadOriginally Posted by Erin

That's pretty funny. But by now you've seen BrazilianWoman's post, which makes it even funnier.Originally Posted by Dingus
Yeah, I've learned over the years that coders aren't the most tactful support people. I try not to hold it against them, though. I try to assume they mean well and of course, they must get tired of people like mewho don't know PHP code. Usually it's the user who's doing something wrong, not the software. So I guess it's kind of dumb luck on my part that I was right and the software was wrong. Actually, the guy who fixed it told me that the fix should've been in the code in the first place.
Now I just gotta figure out why PMs don't show read after they're read! Another challenge ahead.![]()

Ah, I remember that post! And it still makes me kind of mad that the Portuguese guys were trying to tell me that a gente was wrong to use for first person plural--not slang, just wrong.Originally Posted by BrazilianWoman

DISCLAIMER: Pardon me for this. But believe me, I am still a nice (okay -OK would be a better word) person no matter what impression this post might give you.Originally Posted by Erin

Well, I have this nasty compulsive behavior of stalking (I suppose I could use the expression "tracking down", but somehow I end up feeling it is unnatural behavior for anyone so I call it "stalking") the posts of anyone whom I know and like over the net. That includes you (unfortunately?) Just in case you feel uncomfortable with the idea - let me rush to add that there are about 15 people on the stalked list already - so you are not the only person whose posts get stalked on a regular basis. I guess what makes it worse is I just don't track posts across one forum, I google and track them over multiple forums and websites!! Strange hobby I agree, but its sometimes fun like getting to see different facets of the same person without ever having seen them in person. I find it very interesting that instead of the normal process by which one gets to know a person i.e. by what she/he looks like, body and facial language etc, I get an opportunity do it exclusively through the person's thoughts and expression. An ideal way, don't you think? I wish it were like that in the real world. Yes, I insist this is not like the real world at all. My real world is so different. In my profession, I can't really have the luxury of not seeing people and assessing them solely on their thoughts - EVER.
So, the upshot of this rather monotonously boring and quite off-topic monologue is that I have read a fair number of your posts in the vbulletin forums ever since I stumbled upon it. I had to put in the above explanation just in case you think I don't seem like a very OK person - a sort of justification if you like. :o
Have you noticed that the PM message attribute (number of messages unread) changes everytime you delete a single PM from the inbox OR sent-box? It is as if a deletion is needed to update the status. I think it may point to the fact that the software doesn't have regular cycles of update. The PM status only changes when the total number of messages change.
Hehe. That's about it. A puny observation with a lengthy explanation and going nowhere. :o
I would love being a tech-person. Instead I am stuck as a so-totally-non-tech person without a clue about tech-aspects, coding and the cool stuff.
