this habbit could become compulsive. so let us better learn to type formal English (it would benefit both us and others)

I agree with Michael Sir in principle but would like to add that abbrevations add their own, rather non formal flavour to the conversation.Sometimes they are indispensible on the web "eg"- lol,ASAP,IMHO,brb,g2g,oic,omg.... etc.
what say my respected friends ?

ASAP I have known and used for a long time. It is a phrase now in common colloquial use. LOL, IMHO I know but only after having them explained. omg, oic, g2g, brb are meaningless to me, I have never encountered them. Thank you for proving my point. Michael

omg =oh my god oic= oh I see brb= be right back g2g=got to go...... Actually I see them as born out of necessity, rather than just frivolity. These terms are extensively used in chat, where abbravations/acronyms save a lot of labor (labour) while typing for the words that are repeatedly used. Of course there is every reason for a purist to get offended by these. I see a simile in the opinion about orthodox batting stance of some world class cricket players. Those players who do not have an orthodox stance are generally booed by purists, irrespective of that fact that the batsman scores runs or not.

ur? As a crossword fanatic I thought it was an old city. Or do you mean err? Or you are? Or is it an acronym for U…R… whatever or wherever that might be? Or even (surely not) the Norwegian for watch? None of those make any sense in that context. And if omg = oh my god, and brb = be right back, why isn't 'Oh, I see' ois? Michael
