coolpaggy,

I think the Cockney alphabet (or here for more advanced learners) has more logic than that.

To go completely off topic this rather reminds me of my daughter when she was tiny and learning her letters.

For some reason we never fathomed she used the sound 'kuh' (as in kuh for kick) as a generic term for anything that stood for something, hence A might have been kuh for apple.

That was confusing enough to people who didn't know this, but at the time she was into Thomas the Tank Engine and the name of each engine was ascribed to each member of the family, her teddy etc. Grandma and Grandpa were Donald and Douglas so she would point to a D and say "kuh for Grandpa". However things became quite surreal when she used the same technique with the loco's numbers, thus pointing to a figure 9 and saying "kuh for Grandma". This convinced those not in the know that she had inherited her father's cerebral limitations, but what surprised me was that she was right every time.

And if that hasn't bored you into submission nothing will.

Michael

hehe
let me bore you a further more.

I am a native Marathi speaker. So obviously my son has learned Marathi terminology prior to learning 'A' for 'Apple'.
One day a fine visitor gifted him with a new book of aphabets with pictures. Now his old book had 'H' for 'House', but according to his old book 'H' was for 'Hen' with a picture of a fluffy Hen ! A hen is called a Kombdi in Marathi, and my son had no idea about the fact 'H' could stand for for 'Hen' as well.

So when the genleman asked him alphabets, when he arrived at 'H', it was H for kombdi !

True cridamour. Today's technology tries to create miniature stuff to a great extent. But, application of these should be selective and we shouldn't jus use it in any sort of thing. Big Brother is always the custom....

kronique,

Maybe not what you would expect.

Texting as a means of communication has constraints imposed by the nature of the medium it uses. To that extent it has created (and here I'm speaking of English - the same doubtless applies to other tongues) what is effectively a new written dialect of the language. This is similar to the specialised language employed over the radio in the aviation industry, by the emergency services and so on.

Given that people who wish to communicate their ideas and values to others (in this case The Bible) will be more successful if they use as many means as they can this development will aid them. It is a logical development and perhaps a means of reaching an audience that would be difficult to reach by conventional means.

The link you give implies that it will be a sort of phonetic transliteration rather than a modernised version and I think that is probably a good thing. I always get twitchy when work is 'translated to modern language'. I see nothing wrong in doing that for something like The Bible providing it is done into real modern language. Experience with the Church of England suggests that all too often a sort of mock sacred language is created which is incredibly awful and often no more accessible to people than the original was, an example that particularly bugged me was changes made to The Book of Common Prayer.

Staying off topic a while there can also be a loss of literary value in modernising. The King James' Bible and the 1662 Common Prayer Book were masterpieces of English and with marvellous rhythms, especially in the services. Modern versions have none of that. It's a bit like putting Shakespeare into modern language - you can't because it will no longer be Shakespeare!

However to get back to texting (which I don't use). I see it as a useful means of communication in certain circumstances, maybe it would be more useful if its form was regularised to a standard format. But I also see it as potentially dangerous for those who become addicted to it and use it for inane, unnecessary conversations similar to those they have in internet chat rooms.

What does make me mad is when texting conventions get used in places where normal language could and should be used, such as letters, reports, these boards, etc. That reduces the understandability of the language and is a threat to its continued existence.

Oh dear, now you've got me going again, I'll have to go and have one of my pills.

Michael
