A survey about mental disorders, revealed that one out of four citizens in this country is suffering from some kind of mental illness or disorder.

Think of your three best friends. If they are OK, then it's you.

I first wrote "anonymous", as I did not remember the true author of this. I found it out later.

    Here is the original piece...

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.

    -Rita Mae Brown
(American author and playwright; born 1944)

And I was curious, just as Erin would be, and did a Google search on this. I found the same Quote on the following pages...

and these are only a few of the total 1,560 or so results (exact matches!)

Erin, how come you didn't come across this before?

By the way Erin, do you have three friends who are 'okay'?

You know, the thing is that most of my friends will readily admit that they are suffering from some sort of mental or emotional disorder, whether it's stress, overwork, anxiety, or depression. Unfortunately, a lot of the Americans I know, for example the people I went to college with, represent how a lot of other people in the US feel.

So, this joke made me laugh, but at the same time, it made me a little bit sad to think about the kinds of problems people can have living in American society, with its full range of benefits and drawbacks--stress, stress, stress (one of our major problems); freedom for some, but lack of upward mobility for others; endemic racism among some, but such vibrant, complete acceptance in others (such as in San Francisco), poverty and wealth; violent and meaningless crime, school shootings, etc., etc., etc.

Perhaps when this was written, people were less reluctant to confess their anxieties; today, I don't think this is the case.
