    Hi,
I was wondering what my chances are at Langone Part-time program (NYU). I have a low GMAT score (620), but I plan on re-taking it. I have an undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering (GPA 3.0) and MS in Computer Science (GPA 3.5). I understand that my academic qualifications aren’t all that impressive, especially given that I fall in the “Indian applicant” category. But even though I have a technical background, what make me stand apart from the rest of the applicants in the category is that for the past 3 years I have worked in an entrepreneurial group within a major corporation. My job responsibilities as a member of this group included, working in multidisciplinary teams on topics of strategic relevance to the company, conducting ethnographic research (which includes spending days at a customer site observing their process to better understand and identify their needs), concept creation (based on the identified customer needs) and business modeling. So to summarize it’s similar to the innovation process employed by IDEO. Besides this, over the years I have participated in several extracurricular activities, such as worked in local mentoring program for kids, organized cultural shows in collage, was the treasurer of a club, member of a co-ed service fraternity in collage that organized programs like blood drives etc, mentored high school students as part of a summer program several years ago, member of a hiking club, certified scuba diver etc….. Again, there is no “wow” factor in the list of activities I have mentioned above.

Just curious as to what you think my chances are at getting into the part-time program at Stern.

    Thanks,
    meg

    did u get in?

    hey Meg,
I am in a very similar situation as you are. Just took the GMAT, scored 590 (low, I know).
I have a bachelors and masters in Computer Science and have been working for 5 yrs. Now I am a project manager and I do have a lot of extracurricular activities.
Should I even consider applying for STERN? Did u get in?
    Please reply.
    Thanks

Stern's average GMAT is 694 for full-time, with a middle 80% range of 640-750; for part-time students the average is 679 and the middle 80% range is 620-730.

38% is very hard to swallow for most schools. You probably should try to retake to get it up at least over 70%

Top schools generally want to see Verbal 35-40.

Active participation in extracurricular activities, or civic activities, or professional organizations could be evidence of both characteristics. So could individual accomplishments such as mastery of a second or third language, proficiency with a musical instrument, and participation in a group activity, whether competitive such as individual sports like golf and tennis or cooperative such as team sports like soccer and basketball.

Adcoms are looking for students who work AND play well with one another, so "interesting accomplishments" would make a candidate more attractive. However, such accomplishments by themselves are not likely to be sufficient reason to accept an applicant. From the perspective of an admissions officer, it is not the fact of the experience or accomplishment that is important but the significance of that experience or accomplishment, that is, what it means in terms of ability and motivation.

My buddy is currently waitlisted at NYU. Some people have suggested he take the GMAT again, however with his heavy work schedule, he feels he can't retake it at this time.
