My chances at top 20 schools?

recently gave my GMAT. I am a software Engineer from India (little cliche now ). I scored 750 (Q51, V40). I will have 5 years of work ex by Fall next year(approx 4 now), which is when I want to start my MBA (fall 2006). I am not sure how to calculate GPA, but it might be aorund 3.2.

Also I have not got any promotion as such for the past 3 yrs inthe compnay i am working for...its a large organisation with lots of factors and waiting lists for promotions..

I have 1.5 years of work ex in USA. Currently working with a US Client for my Parent company in INdia at the client side. So international experience in some form.

What do you think are my chances at top 10 schools. If not please let me know my chances at Duke/UNC CHapel Hill/CMU/Haas.

Hoping to hear from someone soon

Thanks,
Akshay

Re: My chances at top 20 schools?

1) how old are you?
2) what company you work for? start up or blue chip?
3) what kind of E/C do you have?
4) are you a US resident. PR holder?
5) You might get better response posting this on busiess week.

My initial take for top-5 or M7 schools
H - slim to none. They are not that hot on IT
S - maybe if you can pull the stanford A essay
W - maybe based on execution
Chi - Maybe depends on execution
Col - Maybe but most likely you will get WL
Sloan - Maybe. they like eng. but be sure to sent in your app in R1
Kellogg - slim... They don't like eng. that much

UNC - good chance
Duke - good chance but harder than UNC
CMU - they love your GMAT score so.... very good chance
Hass - maybe. depend if you are PR or indian national.

So does it actually hurt or help to be a Permanent Resident or US Citizen?

Re: My chances at top 20 schools?

It will help as you are compared against the same bucket of ppl. And PR and US Citizens are usually less competitive pool historically. However, due to the recent drops in international applications, this statement might not be true anymore.

Re: My chances at top 20 schools?

THanks lot Bond and GMAT Bong. THese were useful insights. I am on a work permit here. My company is a Blue Chip company listed on the Nasdaq. (www.infosys.com)
Duke would be a good university for me. But what is it that I can do to improve my chances. Also how should I go about the admission process from now on. I still hae to give my Toefl. Also, some ppl say it is better to aplly in round 2 vis a vis round 1, if there are no rolling admissions. Is that true? Please help me out guys

Re: My chances at top 20 schools?

I have been following the BW posts from the past couple of weeks. From what I have learnt, the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. Its just an urban legend that people are repeating when they say that your chances are better in R2 than in R1.

Re: My chances at top 20 schools?

It depends on the school and the applications volume. For MIT Sloan, definitely round 1 since round 2 dropped off in acceptant rate signaficantly(MIT only has 2 rounds). For others, most school place a lot of canidate on WL for round 1 so as to compare them to the quality of round 2. The issue with this is if there is a big drop in application volume, round 2 is better since lower quality of app might sneak in. If there is a raise in application volume, then round 1 is better.

Now the application volume has a direct corelation with economic activities and starting salary. If starting salary starting to going up then volume will start jumping again. Well... looks like starting salary is going up now.
