My college was in India. I have a BA(hons) in Economics and a Post Graduate diploma in Management. My overall percentage is around 68% --which i presume should be a gpa above 3.0--what do u think???? I have good letters of recommendations from my seniors---any chance? Actually I am pretty depressed -----I just received a rejection from SIm program at Berkeley----I had a gre score of 1450 and awa of 5.0---so i think i may just get rejected from all places---- |

I just wrote about this in a recent post. From what I've seen with my students here, it's tough for internationals to get into the UC's, even the "easier" ones. Your stats seem okay, except for your GMAT score--it's a bit on the low side. Most of the students I've had in your situation have continued taking the test until they could get 700, or close to it.
I don't mean to take away any of your hope, but you do need to be realistic. Also, many of the schools might be considering your application, but are hesitating because of your low score. I suggest you try to talk to the adcoms, if you can. Although I have to say that many of the UC's are very disorganized and almost impossible to talk to, typical of a government institution in the US, I'm afraid. |

Thanks for your reply Erin---
I interviewed with an alumni at UCLA-----it went of well--But after reading your views on UC's dis--inclination towards foreign students---I think chances are pretty remote----I will keep my fingers crossed and hope-- as for another gmat----time has already passed---maybe next year--- also do u have any idea on how is UC Santa Cruz---- |

A lot of the schools have some sort of quota for the number of internationals they can admit, and you will notice that many programs choose something like one, two, or three people ONLY from various countries. For example, if you're Japanese, and the program has already admitted one Japanese, your chances are low. My experience with this comes from some of my more aggressive students who research schools and participate in forums (like this one) to chat with current students and alumni. These students have pointed out this trend to me, and it seems pretty accurate. Oh, I met a professor from Haas at a party a couple months back, and he told me, though, that there are many Indians in his classes.
As for the time for the GMAT--I've had students take it as late as May and still get into good programs! |
