Hi David
I'm a software engineer with 3+ years of experience. I've got admission to NYU School of Continuing and Professional for MS in Management and Systems. I do know NYU Stern is ranked 12, but I am not sure if the School of Cont. and Prof. studies is as good as Stern. So I'm really have a tough time deciding if I should join the school. I've also got admission at George Washington University for MS in Information Systems Technology with concentration in Project management. Can you please give me some information on these schools and degrees and the chances of Employement etc. Is it really worth going for it? thank you very much Riya |

An MBA is a much different degree than an MS in Management and/or Systems. The best degree for you will depend on your future career goals. Sincerely, David Petersam 703.242.5885 www.admissionsconsultants.com/mba/ Admissions committee experience from the top b-schools |

Hi David,
Am in a tight spot....My profile might get me admitted in one of the good colleges within top 30....but I cant expect any financial aid. People say, I might be able to get some good aid from colleges ranked 30-50. I can, after working for a year or two save enough money to finance my MBA in top 30. But then I will be wasting a year or two.Am 30 years old already. What would you suggest me to do?Should I drop out and apply later or compromise on the rank of the college? Will look forward to your reply. Thanx in advance |

You are "racing the clock" so to speak as your progressing age will start to become a factor in the admissions process. It looks like you will have to make a judgement call on the importance of financial aid versus ranking and prestige. You are not going to be assured of large scholarships at a top 30-50 school. I'd probably advise you to apply to both types of schools and then evaluate your options in the spring. You can also consider public schools if the money is that important to you. Chances are you will be able to repay any debt you take on upon graduation, assuming you attend a good school. Hey David,
Am I glad to have found you!! I am Chartered Accountant from India, and have a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from the Delhi University. Right now, I am in the process of filling application forms to various MBA programs in the U.S. (mainly top 10). Can you please tell me how to convert my percentage scores into GPA? Are the admission committees aware of the fact that it is not easy to score high in certain courses in Indian Universities, and, do these comms. do a comparitive analysis of GPA from different parts of the world? (My B.Com Aggregate is 62.88%) Thanks |

Hello David,
Sorry for bombarding you with so many queries in the same day!! Thanks for being so good ![]() I was wondering what an 'alternate transcript' is, in the context of MBA admissions! Could you enlighten me on that? How important, in your opinion, is the Essays part of an application? I am afraid I am not too good in writing compositions! Will it hamper my chances? I did my C.A. articleship with one of the Big Fives, in Delhi, and have 4 yrs of post qualification experience with them. For the past 1 year, I am working with one of the leading banks in the Middle east, with their Investment Banking Division. How does this multinational experience in corporate finance affect my chances at the top 10 business schools? (I am most interested in INSEAD) |

Thanks for all your work in this forum!
I'm currently examining the part time programs in L.A. - UCLA FEMBA/USC MBA PM programs and am wondering what else I should do to improve my chances. I think GMAT and essays will be the most important. But anything else would be helpful since I could not attend a prestigious school for economic reasons (worked 20-40 hours per week to put myself through state school, including 3 internships). Academics: 3.33 overall Cal State in economics, 3.6 major GPA, 3.7 Jr./Sr. years (graduated with Departmental Honors VP of Entrepreneurship club, etc.) + UCLA Ext. certificate in finance (in progress) 3.8-3.9 GPA (incl. accounting, biz stats, biz calc). Not taken GMAT. It's safe to assume average (UCLA) or above (USC) for admitted applicants (I have a REALLY good GMAT teacher). Work Experience: 2 years financial analyst for a fortune 500 CA bank (in Beverly Hills) with personal ties to the Anderson School + Entertainment industry & high profile clients. Significant increases in responsibility over the time I was here. Expect 1 promotion before I apply for Fall 2005 (3.25 years we) or 2006 (4.25 years we). Community service: Once a week work at a grade school and help a student improve his reading abilities. Other various things but nothing consistent. Other: Maybe CFA level I before I apply? Any suggestions will be welcomed, Thanks again! |

The admissions committees have specialists for international applicants who are familiar with the universities in those countries as well as their grading scales. As a result, they will be pretty knowledgeable about interpreting your scores. While you are right that it is not easy to score high, the Indian national applicant pool is extremely competitive so low marks relative to other applicants from your demographic will leave you at a distinct disadvantage that may be hard to mitigate. As a result, it will be even more important for you to distinguish yourself in your application story. Don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you would like professional assistance with your applications.
