Hello,
Regarding my previous post I also have another note I forgot to add, I did a lot of undergrad research on campus besides normal load. The thing is, I do not want to do anymore of this technical work and so I am looking to shift scope. So, with a very high GMAT score and exactly 2 years of work experiences, what are my chances ?(6 months internship + 1.5 years of work experience) Also if i take my GMAT in 2008, will the score be accepted if I apply in 2010 /2011. ? Thank-you very much! |

Have PhD in electrical engineering in a mid tier school (rank 40-50). Scored 740 on GMAT. Have 2 years experience in R&D. Plus months experience in a research group in a top telecommunications firm. Age 29. Handful of publications. Solid mathematics background.
Grad school GPA 3.96 Citizenship: India I am interested into entering finance/venture capital program. Aiming Stanford, Berkeley, NYU, Uchicago, UCLA, Columbia. How competitive would I be to these schools? 6 years experience practicing karate. Speak Korean and Japanese. Just got rejection from Princeton finance program. How competitive would I be in getting into these schools? Should I focus on rank 25-50 schools? I am currently applying for 3rd round. |

Hello David,
I would love some advice before I start my GMAT and business school journey. Education: B.S. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Cornell University (3.0 GPA) Master of Engineering in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Cornell University (3.3 GPA) Background: - 9 years total experience. For the last 7 years, I have built deep supply chain "IT" implementations experience with demand planning applications. (1 year big five,1 year startup, 4 years software vendor, 3 years midsize consulting firm.) Weak extracurriculars (Married with 1 year old daughter if she counts as an EC activity) Target: 700+ GMAT and NYU, Columbia, Sloan, Cornell, Wharton, HBS (top NE school) or bust. At this point in my career, I've done most of what I want to do in my current field. I'm interested in changing careers. At some point I'd like to start my own company so I'd probably specialize in product management... other interests include asset management/real estate/entrepreneurship/vc. 1) I'm currently a supply chain (IT) consultant (manager level) with deep technical and functional expertise in demand planning. I'm considering taking a job now as an IT application manager at a local company that could use my DP/S&OP knowledge. I would do this to take on more management and project management responsibility and enhancing my deep demand planning knowledge from the client's perspective. I want to do this in order to have better quality of life (not travel anymore and see my 1 yr old daughter every night), to study for the gmat and to apply to bschool. Is this a wise decision if I plan to apply to bschool for R1 '09 next year? Any negative implications if I choose to do this? Is it preferable to have recommendations from current employers, and thus should I stay with my current job? Is it more advantageous in any way to be working in consulting vs industry at the time of application? 2) I don't really have any extracurricular activities. Can I "deflect" this due to extensive travel and increased responsibilities with my 1 yr old daughter? Does real estate "investing" count as an extracurricular activity/hobby? 3) Any other quick tips for my profile? For example, am I too old? What are good reasons for applying this "late" in my career? Thanks in advance Last edited by spaceboy : 02-29-2008 at 05:53 AM. |

The low GPA is a concern. Taking summer courses would not hurt your chances but rather give you some leverage and help to highlight your determination. Also, taking a graduate level finance course could help illustrate your interest in this particular field. In terms of extracurricular involvements, it is never a waste to commit more time to networking opportunities. There are some great organizations and associations in the DC area and you have plenty to choose from for future consideration. If you do opt to volunteer, stick to something that serves as a real interest. The committee will disregard something that looks orchestrated simply to provide you with more content for your applications. If you have an interest that you have committed to over the years and have some connection to, reconnecting with that interest could be fruitful if you would be able to show a more continuous interest and involvement. Finally, your GMAT score is quite solid but if you feel you could score higher, a stronger GMAT score would help you stand out against your competition. Best of luck with your applications! The research work on campus can certainly help your profile if you are able to successfully weave it in to your overall story. However, as stated in my previous post, it will be imperative that you identify leadership and management potential. You mention 6 months internship and 1.5 years of work experience, it is not really the amount of time that suffices but rather the experiences gained. You will have to examine what projects and examples you have to bring to the table. In regards to your GMAT question, your score is valid for five years after the test date. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam President AdmissionsConsultants, Inc |

First of all, applying for R3 is always competitive – even for the most stellar applicant. I am not sure where you stand with your applications or if you have expanded your list of schools, but make sure to carefully address why you want a finance masters and not an MBA degree. Princeton may have dinged you because they though the MBA degree was a better fit for your needs. You are obviously capable of doing the work – your GMAT score and GPA attest to that fact but you must convince the admission committee that you will not only excel academically but also professionally. You have to not only highlight your research background but also be able to weave in management and leadership potential. Best of luck with your applications! If this new job position that you mention would take you a step closer to your career goal (with an MBA being the next step), then taking it might make sense; if it wouldn't, then it probably does not. However, there are a variety of factors to consider when making such a decision. Most importantly, to make this decision, you must have your career objectives clearly outlined and your strategy plan for achieving those objectives must be well defined. Your GPA is a concern, but your GMAT would likely count for more in your case given how long ago it has been since your graduated from undergrad. Nine years of experience is quite high for top-level b-schools; that, and your extremely high level of specialization in one technical area over all that time is also an issue you must address in your applications. If you would like to discuss your profile in more detail, please do contact our office. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam President AdmissionsConsultants, Inc |

Your commitment to IT and your involvement in tennis is certainly an interesting mix. Your long term goals in this regard do make sense but you will have to carefully craft a strong story to address why you are now ready to make an entire switch and commitment to sports management. To help you ease into that connection, it will be important that you emphasize the leadership and management responsibilities you have had thus far in your career and with your sports involvements. Take your management knowledge and that can possibly serve as your link. There are various factors involved when considering a possible list of schools to target. I cannot provide you with such advice on a public forum for a range of variables must be considered. If you would like to discuss this option in more detail, please do contact us. In terms of what you should be doing in these next coming months before you apply, keep on focusing on your interests and begin to consider possible recommenders that can help validate your potential for your future career switch. Also, I would recommend that you consider retaking the GMAT. A 710 for your particular demographic pool is low, you should aim for at least a 730+ plus if you plan to compete for top tier schools. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam President AdmissionsConsultants, Inc |
