You are not going to be competitive at the top schools given what you stated in your post about your school, GMAT, and lack of work experience. While I don't enjoy breaking bad news, you are going to be wasting a lot of time and effort if you target the competitive schools. This includes schools such as Kenan Flagler that apparently don't require your transcripts be evauated by an outside company. (I pulled that last bit from your email to me.) I'm not familiar with New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico. If you're still young, you may want to consider working on your positioning and waiting a few years to apply. You may be a stronger applicant at that time. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam 703.242.5885 Admissions committee experience from the top b-schools |

Hi David,
Just gave my GMAT - got a 710. I know its a bit low coz I too belong to the Indian Engineer application pool. I have a 75+% in Mechanical Engineering (distinction). I worked one year in my family business - helped my sister start up her business (which is now having a turnover of over $250,000 / year). After a year I thought that I needed exposure and experience in a more corporate environment. So I joined a IT firm in Bangalore. At the moment I am working on an overseas assignment with a top financial banking company. I plan on doing an MBA and then help grow my family business from the current $4 millon turnover. Extracurricular: Have been involved with quite a few voluntary work. And started a college magazine (begged for finances and distributed it free to start with). My choice of colleges: UCLA, UMICH (I was admitted to their undergrad program - dont know if it makes any difference), Kelly, Fischer, Manchester, Rotterdam How would you assess my chances? Your suggestions are keenly awaited. Thanks |

David-
I just had a quick GMAT question that I've posted elsewhere on Testmagic, but haven't received any reply. Hopefully you might be able to offer some insight. I scored a 44Q and 41V for a total of 690. I have seen others on this site mention that they had the same verbal and quant scores yet received 700's. Do you have any idea if it's possible to have the same verbal and quant scaled scores as another test taker yet receive a different total score? I emailed the ETS about this, but they did not provide any sort of direct response to my question. Thanks for your time. |

Your GMAT score is indeed a bit below the average for the admitted Indian nationals at the top b-schools. This does not mean, however, that it will be impossible for you to get into a top school with a 710. For starters, your high undergrad score can help begin to mitigate any concerns about your academic qualifications. Your extracurricular experiences and the story you tell – and perhaps more to the point how well you differentiate yourself from the many other Indian IT applicants – will play a key role in the success you have with your applications. The fact Michigan accepted you into its undergrad program will have no bearing on your chances at the b-school. It’s a different program, different admissions officers, and a different time. With good extracurriculars and a well-prepared story, you should be competitive at the schools you listed above, with UCLA and Michigan being the most selective and, hence, your stretch schools of this bunch. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam 703.242.5885 Admissions committee experience from the top b-schools |

Hi David,
Thanks for taking the time to provide so much useful information to this board. My question pertains mostly to fully-employed programs, so unsure if you can provide any feedback or not. By the time I apply for matriculation in 2005, my profile will be as follows: 29 years old, 7 years experience in marketing/public relations for start-ups but most of the time at a very large, well-known global software vendor. BA in Political Science from UCLA in 1997 (3.2 GPA) and a GMAT score of 670 (41 Quant, 39 Verbal -- I know, not great). I did not have a rigorous quantitative workload at UCLA nor was my quant score on the GMAT exceptional, so I have taken Micro and Macro Economics through Berkeley Extension as well as 5 different marketing courses (All A's). I am also in the midst of taking a statistics and an accounting course as well before I apply. As far as community service, I dedicate plenty of time to a YMCA Tutoring program as well as the SF Food Bank. I relaize the GMAT score is not great, but wondering if you can assess my chances for admission at the Haas part-time program, UCLA's FEMBA, NYU's Langone program...I may also take a flyer and apply for full time at Kellogg for its marketing strength, but I realize that is a HUGE longshot. Other FT programs I am considering applying to include Darden, Michigan and McCombs. I would appreciate any insight you have. Thank you for your feedback! |

We do help a large number of applicants each year gain admission into part-time programs. We also interview dozens of admissions officers from the part-time programs each year and we are familiar with those programs and how they differ from their full-time counterparts. With your GMAT score and A’s in the alternative transcript courses you are taking or plan to take, I see no reason why your academic qualifications would harm your chances at any of the schools you mentioned. We do have consultants in SF who you can work with and meet in person if you so desire. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you would like additional information on our services. Best of luck with your applications! Sincerely, David Petersam DPetersam@admissionsconsultants.com Admissions committee experience from the top b-schools |

Prepared weekly/monthly/quarterly portfolio monitoring reports. Developed detailed screens for identifying potentially attractive securities for various senior analysts. Presently, with my GMAT Score, GPA, and above average experience, I am thinking of applying to some of the top schools. I was wondering first, what level of school you would consider me eligible for? Second, I was wondering whether, in some of the essays, you would include the work done in College as an intern and as a Research Assistant, as that work helped guide me in my career path? Finally, considering the lateness of the application process, how long do you think it should take me to get approximately 6 complete applications out if I work approximately 60 hours a week, if I put the appropriate time into the applications? Thanks for your help, James |
