    Question Re: Ask AdmissionsConsultants

    Hi David

I am a new entry to the long list of Indian IT applicants. I must acknowledge that your mails have been highly informative and i really appreciate the way you have been guiding so many candidates. May be you could find time to judge my chances for entry into some business schools.

I am currently completing my Computer Science Engg. from a reputed college in India and have a grade point average of 8.5 (on a scale of 10). I am into final year and will be completing my Bachelors in Engineering in June 2005. I was hoping that if i can make into some good B-schools for courses beginning after that. I havent given the GMAT as yet but plan to give it in near future and i think i can manage a score of 740 or more. In my college i have been offered a job by two companies, 1. IBM Global Services and 2. Infosys Techonlogies. Though both the jobs are good and i can join any firm but i wish to go into management and try my luck if i can get an entry into some good b-schools.

I have been very good at extra-curriculurs all through my studies, I am a brown belt in Karate and have national level Gold medal in that. I have won state-level and district-level science fair in school for developin a model of future town. I am a good player of cricket and our team has won number of tournaments at college level. I have keen interest in dramatics and have won number of prizes in same. As far as my leadership and organizational skills are concerend, I have been secretary and joint secretary of Dramatics comiitee and i have also served my school as house captain. I have also done my bit in charity work, i gave free tutions to poor and needy children. We opened a social organization that collected money from people and donated them to larger social groups.

Actually I have number of queries, u can feel free to answer any of them which you like (though i would be very happy if you answer all). So here goes.

    1. Since I have no industry experience at all, other than my internship training (which wasnt from very reputed organization, but i got good work), is it even logical on my part to think of getting into some good business school. Is it really necessary to have work experience. Should i even apply as a fresher, can it have any disadvantages in future if I reapply.

    2. I have not given GMAT as yet (and havent started the preaption also ), what should be latest possible time when i should give the GMAT to hope to have a chance of admissions into courses beggining after june 2005. And most importantly which b-schools should i aim for ( i would not mind going to top non-us schools as well).

    3. How much will a 2 year experience at IBM Global Services boost my chances of getting into Top-10 b-schools. I mean that should i wait for two years and then apply or do i stand a chance this time as well.

    4. I would also like to avail some of your services, but as i am very new to this thouht of joining a business school i donot have much knowledge. if you can give me an insight on that too, you can contact me on my email id riteshchopra337@yahoo.com.

    5. Finally, do i have a chance in top-20 B-schools.

I really thank all the people who have reached this far reading this mail and are still awake. You really do have a lot of patience. I will be eagerly waiting for a reply.

    Ritesh

Hi Comrade and thanks for your inquiry.

Please use the Ask AdmissionsConsultants thread if you have a question for me. It will make things easier for me and it will also make Erin's discussion board a lot easier for other users to follow.

A transcript is an official list of the courses you took and grades/marks (if any) that you received.

Best of luck with your applications!

Hi Rizwan and thanks for your inquiry.

Unfortunately, I do not have enough data points to competently assess your chances. Your test scores will be important as will your extracurricular activities and quality of that one year of work experience.

Best of luck with your applications!

Hi mawaru and thanks for your inquiry.

We do offer comprehensive admissions consulting services and essays are certainly an important aspect of that. We do *not* offer per essay pricing because (1) the admissions committees care about more than just essays and per essay pricing will *not* maximize your chances and (2) the essays need to be examined holistically and not individually in a vacuum. If your essays do not convey a solid and complete story, you will be dinged.

We have fixed-fee payment options that are highly price competitive on a per application basis. If you only want help with essays, we can assist you on an hourly basis. You can learn more about our advantages, success rate, specializations, etc by visiting our website.

We still have some full-time consultants accepting new clients and our full-time consultants literally spend their full time assisting applicants such as yourself. That combined with their admissions committee experience makes them very special. (My full-time job is maintaining the website, processing credit card payments, answering general inquiries, etc.)

Best of luck with your applications!

Hi Ritesh and thanks for your inquiry.

Get some work experience first if you want to be competitive at the top schools. I don't care so much about the "name" of the employer. Find a job that will start preparing you for your post-MBA career goals and that will allow you to develop both professionally and personally. It is better to take a position with a small company that will give you lots of responsibility quickly than to work for a large company where you will not be challenged.

Non-US b-schools, in general, care even more about work experience than their American counterparts.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Hey David,

I have a questions about recommendations... who should I get them from besides my direct supervisor? Is a coworker who's more senior than me OK?

    Thanks!

Hi Robert and thanks for your inquiry.

That's a tough question with such little background information. A coworker can work and we have worked with successful applicants who used a coworker. You need to take an inventory of who can write a favorable reference for you and then determine which ones can best substantiate your story, mitigate your weaknesses, highlight your strengths, etc.

Best of luck with your applications!

    Re: Ask AdmissionsConsultants

    Hey David/Guys,

I have a question regarding reapplication. I had applied last year to some of
the top schools. I managed to get a into some of the top 15, but didnt go. Cause
I ONLY wanted to go to the top 10.

This year I'm applying to Wharton, Chicago and Kellogg and a failsafe school.
Couple of questions... was wondering if you could give some advice

    1) I want to know what I should do this year to improve my chances at these schools.
I forgot to ask for feedback last year, so I dont know which area(s) of my application
was/were week. I have three years WorkExp (4 counting next year).

    2) Most of the esssay topics are the same for reapplicants (at least for Kellogg) So I'm
thinking I should change the words and put in the relevant changes since my last application. Am I correct in thinking so ?

    3) What about essay topics like ethical dilemma or worst mistake in life (they havent changed since last year, so should i just use the same essay ?)

    4) David, I understand you have a Chicago MBA right - what words of advice can you give us regarding getting accepted there ?

Thanks for your time. Much appreciate what you are doing here.
