How do MBA schools determine background GMATBong

Hi GMATBong and others,

How do MBA schools determine your background? I understand certain backgrounds i.e. Indians have to fight in a more competitive pool.

Is it based on your name? Or the country that you were born in?

Or is based on the country you did your undergrad in, are a citizen of and reside in?

Or is it something you are asked to report on? Is it mandatory? Do you have to attach your photo to the app?

Its a little of everything. Where were you born, school you went to, job you hold. female or male (the easy one)? Citizenship? minority?

Some of them you don't have to report but admin can sort this out without much info. Nope, you don't need to attach photo in your app - this is what the interview is all about. You can't say in your app that you are black when it turns out you are white during the interview.

Thanks for the quick response.
Just to follow-up, I was born in India and went to high-school there.
When I was 18 I moved to Canada, did my university over here, became a Canadian citizen and every job I have ever had has been in Canada.

I work in IT Consulting Sales.

Will I be lumped with the doomed Indian-Male-IT applications

Is there a way for me to prevent them for classifying me in that pool?

Thanks

You won't lump with Indian Male IT but there are enough Indian-Male-IT- US/Canada citizen that this pool is a little better but still very competitive.
