Hi--Profile Evaluation

Hi,

Could you help in evaluating my profile/fit so that I could get a better grip on the coll's I should be targeting?

I am an MBA from an Indian B-School (among the top 15 in India). I am planning to apply in R2 for Fall 2008. Will briefly mention my profile. Currently I work at Bangalore as a Senior Associate with a JV between a FI(IDFC)& State Govt.We offer transaction advisory services (financial 'n legal) for Infrastructure Projects (urban services-solid waste mgmt, water, real estate, transport, urban policy. I am in a mangerial position & have a team of 3/4 ppl. Most of my clients are Govt. Agencies, Urban Local Bodies, State/Central Govts.Other relevant profile details are:
  1. Indian Male; GMAT:700 (q-49;v-36); age-29, WE-5 years
  2. Bachelor degree in Commerce: 7.2/10 (donno hw to present this, my univ wont give me a transcript stating that this means 90-95%ile)
  3. MBA GPA -3.1finance/marketing dual degree)
My post MBA career goal is to work with a IB (focussed towards Infrastructure advisory financing, for example, Macquarie, Babcock Brown) or a Multi-lateral agency (for example WB, ADB,EAR). My present ed. qual. is not an international one. So the objective of doing the 2nd MBA is to bolster my profile and education.
  1. International exposure-An MBA from an international school would provide me the requisite international exposure to take up assignments with the best in the industry. Typically, Infrastructure advisory assignments contribute >10 percent of topline for companies, such as, Babcock Brown and Macquarie. However, Infra advisory is not the lowest hanging fruit when working in India. So domestic FIs are more interested in financing infrastructure projects. However, as the industry matures it would need people, who are equipped with the best of the skill sets. At International Schools, I would not only get the best of the inputs and exposure but also the opportunity to interact with the best of the corporates. Multi-lateral agencies (such as WB, ADB, EAR) and IBs (such as Mcquarie, BB and HSBC), which recruit from International Schools offer interesting job profiles as well as opportunities to work in different countries. It may sound clichéd but I do believe all of this would go a long way in broadening my perspective.
  2. Financing the course-just the right time for me. At this juncture of my life I have sufficient finances and WE, to undertake the course. Sadly, we still do not have the equivalent of IITs for people interested in Commerce. So people such as me, who are more interested in Commerce, do pursue their graduation in Commerce (and I did it well, mus’ be among the 90-95%ile of the university) but the degree does not fetch one as much respect as say an Engineering degree. Hence, came about the decision to do the 1st MBA (In India the concept of MBA without WE is quite popular). I did very well at my 1st MBA. I was the first to secure a job opportunity in campus placements and was the only one to be selected by that particular corporate group from almost the entire pool of students.
I am from the competitive Indian male pool (not the ultra comp. IT engineer pool). Given my etnicity should i rein in my aspirations & apply for coll's lower in ranking.
regards
Gaurav

I think you should do more research on US and European bschool first before asking people like myself which school you should target. It goes a long way in your essay if you know which school is good at what and why you want to go to that school.

Hey thanks for your prompt response. Think I appreciate your advice. I have eben sort of researching colleges. I was planning to take a shot at LBS, NY Stern, IMD and Cornell.

Saddly however, my score might not be good enuff for the first 2 colls. Am not sure. Do plan to give them a try though. As for Cornell, they have stated on their webiste that "we do not encourage applicants, who are already MBAs to apply at our colleges". Would you advice I write to the Cornell Admissions Office and explain my logic?

While sm other US colls, including Stern also say the same, but they qualify the same saying that " If one is a non US MBA, he/she could apply for courses at theirs College".

So am trying to read up as much from college brochures / websites/ forums / blogs. Would loook forward to your advice.

For the four schools, I still don't think you realized its not your score that is the issue. The fact you already have a MBA is a big NO NO in those schools. Your logic is only somewhat sound but does not have enough substance to say you need a MBA. The MBA you had only present itself as poor judgement on your part and as such, limits your potential compare to someone without an MBA degree.

Your best bet if you can't get in (likely so), is to work on different jobs and apply for EMBA in 4-5 more years. At that age, you can be more convincing that the MBA you took 5 years ago no later applies to your job at hand.

Having said that, no harm to try. I don't think you can get in LBS. NYU and Cornell is also unlikely. IMD you are not the Executive level they are looking you. You might want to go for lower rank schools.
