What are my chances of getting into columbia/nyu? Profile included.
hi GMATbong and others,
I need some opinions. What are my chances of getting into columbia/nyu with 1 year of full time work experience? Specifically I would like to attend columbia starting september 08. I want to break into the corporate finance world Here is my quick profile: age: 23 graduated boston university school of engineering computer systems engineering major, 3.4+ gpa cum laude tons of internship experience (every summer since senior year high school) currently working full time as an IT consultant for ibm, started in july 07. by sept 08 (admissions) i will have a little over 1 year of full time experience. btw, is this too much info? should i erase some details, i just wanted to get an accurate response. i haven't taken my gmats yet, but i am studying for it as we speak (usually when im on a plane flying to client sites and in my hotel room, it's kinda tough). but lets say i get a 680+, what are my chances of getting into either of the schools? a lot of people tell me that it's almost impossible to get in a good school (columbia/nyu) with less than 2 years of full time work experience. i checked the school profiles, they dont give the % of accepted students with 0-2 years WE, but they DO have some students that have 0 WE and are age 22. what does everyone think? should i save my money and wait for 09 admissions? is it bad to apply now and if rejected, re-apply next year? or am i better off waiting for 09? thx Last edited by rlee17 : 02-11-2008 at 10:07 PM. |

You should save your money and use your time 1) to study GMAT and 2)to do more extraCurr activities
You are more then welcome to apply since there is usually no harms. However, application fee is usually minor issue. Its your effort and time thats more valuable. |

keep in mind that some reports have indicated that application volume is up ~40% this year and likely to remain high next year as we are (supposedly) going into a recession (a lot of people believe that you might as well do b school when the economy is slow). therefore, the competition at the schools you are interested in and at other top schools is more intense than ever. it's hard to say whether you will get in, and you might as well try if you want to, but realize that for someone with your profile, it is an up hill climb to begin with, and may be even worse now that application volume is up (class size is NOT up). i just applied to m7 schools this year, and i have to say that you will likely not get in -- there is nothing particularly special about your profile that the schools cannot find in hundreds of other applicants. no offense, you just need more time to get work ex and accomplishments + GMAT.
