query regarding CFA/CAIA...GMATbong pls help...

Hi GMATBong,
I am Raju Datla and I am software engineer by profession. I have been working in ARICENT, Bangalore, a telecom services company, and gained around 3 years of experience in the IT industry. My long term plan is to pursue an MBA, and work in financial industry.

Recently, I got know about CAIA (Charted Alternative Investment Analyst) certification. I am planning to pursue this, in order to gain some insight and experience in Finance industry before I apply for an MBA. I have few queries in this regard and solicit your suggestions. I need some expert suggestion to be able to decide between CFA and CAIA.

My queries:

1. Feasibility of a career switch into Finance sector after pursuing CAIA. Especially with zero Finance background as my experience is completely in IT. I also would like to know whether by pursuing CFA level 1, I will be to switch my career from IT to Finance?

2. How aligned is CAIA for an MBA in Finance. I understand that CFA covers traditional financial assets such as equity and fixed income, whereas CAIA is more into PE, VC, hedge funds, Real estate. Does a CAIA certification hurt the chances of getting IB roles post MBA.

3. I have developed liking for CAIA, as it is a 1 year course and can help me gain a foothold in Finance industry in a short time period. On the other hand, CFA is more relevant towards my long term plan(a career in IB) but takes 3 years. Do you agree with me, in going for CAIA because of shorter duration and immediate access to the Fin industry.

4. My friends suggest me that I should look for an MBA instead, and avoid doing CFA/CAIA.But I am really keen in working in the finance industry before an MBA, as I feel my learning would be more from MBA, if I have an appreciation of the Fin industry.

Eagerly waiting for your response in this regard.

Thanks & Regards
Raju
