Hi,
I am a senior student at IIT Roorkee(www.iitr.ernet.in) pursuing BTech in ECE... I have a very genuine question to be answered...How does a MBA degree helps an Engineer to define his career goals in a more clear manner? If a person wants to remain associated with technical field(i mean not purely mangerial job) but at the same time is flexble to handle leadership role, how does a MBA degree can be of help? What are the oppurtunities availaible to a Communication Engg. from an IIT with MBA from IIM after he completes the management course?? Do ppl stand chance to get the same kind of technical job at heavywieghts in Communication (Texas Instrument,Intel,Motorola,STM) after doing MBA as at the time of passing Btech? Or one is forced to pursue managerial line.... Ud u please guide me at this front? Anticipating your help, thanks a lot, manish |

manish,
You seem to be deciding in the wrong order. You should first set your goals -- what you want to do / become in life -- and then ask yourself whether an MBA helps you achieve them. I understand that the Indian system tends to push you on a particular career track without much thought regarding where you really want to go. An MBA basically teaches you how organizations function, how various factors affect the functioning of the organizations, and how one should consider such factors while making decisions when leading an organization. Engineering, on the other hand, teaches you how to apply technology and science to solve everyday problems. You should choose the career track that appeals to you most. Most engineers, as far as I know, study MBA for two reasons: - 1) to become leaders (managers) in their technical organizations; 2) to change their career track from engineering to management / finance / etc. If want a technical job at leading telecom companies, an MS (EE) may be a better career option than an MBA. With an MBA, you will most likely be at a small disadvantage to return back to a technical job because you will have missed out on the technology updates for a couple of years while you pursue your MBA. Hope you find this helpful. Good luck. |
