Hi Ninah,

I think acarbose(precose) is safe during pregnancy. Also, it comes under category B.

Let me know your idea........

I think it is Insulin. Only Insulin in pregnancy. Refer page 274 in APhA under Insulin indications.

Hi YESYOUCAN,

you are right.
of course, insulin is there. but, if they ask you about oral medicine, then only acarbose comes under preg. category B. so, besides the insulin, we can use acarbose.

correct me, if I am wrong.

NAPLEX will not try to trick you. So I do not think you will have to make such a choice for a oral agent. It will be only insulin as THE answer.

FYI, Glyburide [cat C] and Metformin [cat b] are studied in trials. Go to emedicine dot medscape dot com and search for pregnancy and diabetes.

Hi ninah,
Good question...
The answer is Insulin since it controls hyperglycemia quickly and safely. oral med would be metformin which has been shown to be relatively safe in studies

Hi guys,

Like someone said earlier, you probably won't be asked what oral agent to use during pregnancy for diabetes. Always go with insulin... its the gold standard.
