codeine containing OTC drugs---confused

I am very confused with the codeine containing CV preparations. I would like to confirm the statement on page 219 of Barry and Reiss.

I wonder if codeine is opium or not.
I googled and most articles that I found said that morphine and codeine are the two most used alkaloids found in opium.
Morphine is a opium, right? It seems like barry and reiss classify codeine as a controlled substance other than opium.

Could anyone help me to understand opium, opiates and opioid?

Ngumd! Codeine is Methylmorphine, which is an alkaloid derived from opium . Yes it is Opium.

Yeah in page 219 in the note box it says 4 oz of codeine can be sold within 48 hours. When it's opium it should be 8 oz rite.? now i am too confused. IS there anyone who can explain us.

Opium is a milky juice extracted from Papaver sominferum. It contains 20-30 alkaloids including morphine, codein, etc....

Codeine is a controlled medicine use as antitussive.

Codeine is the starting material and prototype of a large class of mainly mild to moderately strong opioids such as hydrocodone,dihydrocodeine and its derivatives such as nicocodeine. (on wikipedia)

Per law in the US, Pharmacist in some states may dispensed 200mg of codeine in the amounts upto 100ml to 120ml, no more often than every 48 hours without a prescription.

The buyer must be 18 years old and with US Government issued ID is required for log purposes.
