WHY IT IS DIFFICULT TO SECURE INTERNSHIP LATELY.
Hello,
This tread in my opinion is timely because of the frustration of those trying to secure Internship. They need some information on why it is like that temporarily. One of the cardinal reason I believe is because these Pharmacy corporatons got all the Annually capped H1B petitions they filed for this year (2009). The recession came with limited petitions. In 2008, there were about 132,000 or there about petitions for the 85,000 H1B approvable visas for that year. I had a slated Internship position but did not make it at the lottery that resulted. My Internship interview included why I wanted to work for the corporation and not any other - there were options then. In 2009 however, the number of H1B petitions came short as the 85,000 petitions approvable were not met; many of the firms were actually laying off. It therefore resulted in Pharmacy corporations getting all the International Interns they filled for resulting in temporary saturation of Intern positions who are resumming Internship about now. I believe there may be other reasons. I am asking your kind support in posting in this thread what in your opinion is the situation and how soon we are likely to see a rebound. Cheers and best of luck to us all. |

I just spoke with Ms Belva Biagas of CVS souple of minutes ago and as for CVS, they will not be hiring Interns until 2010.The reason is that they have a lot of US Graduates that they accomodated as well as pharm techs for their externships making CVS over staffed with Pharmacist. So for us Foreign Pharmacy Graduates... let's hope each other the best of luck!

Exactly, some big chain companies don't want to hire Foreign Graduates. I got reply from Rite Aid, Walgreens, and Walmart, all of them say no opening. It's really hard for our foreign graduates, after the FPGEE, TOEFL..... then we have to face such big hurdle.

Thats interesting that CVS isnt hiring till 2010. What state is that or is that all over the United States ? I heard the same about Rite Aid . Walgreens isnt even answering me so I'm guessing its the same answer. I mean it is November so I'm guessing no one wants to hire now with all the holidays.. This is soo frustrating . Does anyone have any suggestions such as volunteering for hours or somthing? I have an American citizenship and I'm open to any suggestions as I'm desperate. I even thought of going to Texas to take the NAPLEX then starting on the internship.

Hi Prassana,
If you have your Intern Lic on hand then the time you spent in the Pharmacy will be counted plus the learning and experience is something you can always carry with you in the future. It was my first day today and i learned a lot... Tired but it was worth it. |

Hi, Janey:
It's good to start getting your intern hours. Under this tough time, even find a volunteer job is not so easy. After you have some experience, things will change. I'm Canadian, I have only TD visa, I think I can't do volunteer work here. I have to get TN visa to work. |

Hi pharma0712,
I can comment about the VISA requirement, I dont have any idea how things go about that. I just tried my luck in calling all local pharmacies here in my area and the Pharmacy manager was kind enough to accommodate me despite the many students doing internship and externship in his pharmacy. I am working with another pharmacy, but Im doing marketing answer sales for them, I dont know if it can be counted as internship hours too...and yes, this one, Im being paid with a very modest rate... |
