hi

does anyone has an experience of applying for SSN card in sacramento california ? one of my friend applied for SSN and they said it will take 4-6 weeks to get the card. this could delay her joining date by 15 more days since she applied on 1st september and her h1 starts from october 1st.

any inputs will be greatly appreciated. i found this article on IRS website (http://immigrationportal.com/showthr...&highlight=ssn) which states that if you have valid tax id you can start working while waiting for SSN card.

it might help if you show it to your employer.

NO, the tax ID card (ITIN) cannot be used to replace an SSN. They are only for tax filing purposes. They are different numbers from SSN. If you submit the ITIN then later on telling them to replace another set of numbers, they will be suspicious that you are giving them different numbers...

Besides, one cannot start applying for an SSN unless their H1B visa is valid - that is on Oct 1st... I know coz I went thru the same last year.

After 3 weeks from Oct 1st, you can receive a print-out of the SSN when you ask for it at the SSoffice. You can use that to submit to the board so you can start the intern license application process, which takes 2 more weeks. The actual SS card comes a month after.

Like me, I only got to start working by mid-November after receiving the intern license.

looks like California is always the slowest of all things.

i spoke to one of my friend whose company used the ITIN number to start her payroll since SSN office took long time to process the ssn card. actually according to IRS if INS has given u permission to work from october 1st it is not illegal to work.

IRS has clearly mentioned that on the website the link given in my previous posts. moreover it depends on your company policies whether they allow or not. It came to my attention that one can get SSn only after that valid date on h1 visa....so i wanted a time frame. my friend will confirm from her HR and i'll post that if i get any info.

by the way she doesn't need intern license since she'll be working in maryland and not california.

i wanted to post the update on my friend's SSN card for which she had applied in sacramento on 1st september. she got a letter from SSN office on 28th sept stating that she'll recieve her card in post in another 2 weeks and they gave a print out of the SS number on 29th sept....

Just wanted to update info so that it might prove useful for someone who is looking for help in this issue as i was.

Hi Lawu2002 & anyone else doing internship in CA,
how long do you reckon it takes to finish the 1500 hours of internship in CA?
does the Ca pharmacy board have a time limit on how long one can hold an internship licence?

Just asking because i anticipate i will also start my internship late due to ssn and intern licence issuance taking a while to sort out.

hi

I am not sure how many hours the company will allow you to work....since it varies from company to company. if you lets consider work standard 40 hrs/ week without breaks you can complete 1500 hrs within 9-10 months from the day you start. since california doesn't have a restriction on number of hours per week....its all upto your pharmacy manager or company.

in california the intern license is valid for 2 years. the expiration date will be provided on your intern license. it is usually 2 years from the day they approve your intern license when you provide ssn. once you submit ssn # to CA board you can check the status of your application online at - http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/verify_lic.htm

The validity is limited to 2 years unless due to some reason you are not able to complete internship.....the california board reserves the right to allow extension or deny.

please check the rules and regulations on their website to be 100 % sure.
