Osman,
Long time no see! I am not sure whether you need a visa or work permit or not, if you are from UK. Usually, foreign graduates have to file for H-1B visa and work in the US if you are not a US resident. You may try to find a volunteer job if you don't mind about financial gain. However, if you want to move because of economic reason only, I would like you to reconsider. Check with Ninah and kgba. They are from UK. Euro dollars are much stronger than US dollars, presently. That's what you have to think twice. Good luck. Knok

Hello Osman,
I'm afraid I don't know much about the visa situation as I had a greencard when I came here to the US. I'm still a practising pharmacist in the UK (I come over for a month every 6 months and locum), but am now just in the midst of my 1500hr internship here in the US (Cincinnati, Ohio). I'm a hospital pharmacist from London, but have done retail too. Here I'm doing a split internship within hospital and retail also. Here, in the state of Ohio, I didn't find it a problem at all getting internships as they are very desparate for pharmacists. I used to live in Orange county, CA and didn't find it too difficult to get a position there either, however, your chances are greater in terms of variety and promotion if you choose less popular states. I'm planning on taking my NAPLEX in September, and already both the retail (Walgreens) and the hospital (Cincy Children's) have offered me positions permanently. The salaries are on par with the other states with the added benefit of cheaper cost of living in these states, so your money goes a long way here. The main advantage of course for me particularly is that it is only an 8hr direct flight (Delta) into Gatwick from here in Cincinnati compared to the almost 12hr flight into London from LAX...and the fares are a lot cheaper too. It makes a **** of a difference being able to get to my family in London, especially in the first few months as it can get awfully lonely if you haven't got any friends or familiar people around here. So if I were you, I would choose a state to do your internship very carefully. It will always be less of a hassle to have your scores or license transferred across the states once you qualify. If you need any info on internships then I can send my feelers out for you here, but otherwise try the main retail chains like Walgreens (actually this is what I did from London, I sent the district manager of the area I was interested in and organised everything prior to getting here via e-mail and phone, so the day after I landed here, I had an 'interview' and started working at the end of the week). For hospitals, I sent blanket e-mails to all the supervisors of the pharmacy departments of local hospitals and all of them replied back within a couple of days. So, my experience has been pretty great so far, but I have a feeling I'm just fortunate that there are plenty of opportunities here in this state. Good luck Osman with your progress and keep me posted should you require any further info. Best wishes Shani Last edited by knok : 05-11-2008 at 07:05 PM. |

Hi Shani
Thanks for the great advice yes I am working on it right now and if your ever in England and want to meet or just chat it would be nice. Drop me PM and we can catch up. I have contacted a few hospitals and I have had real good feedback due to my experiance, and it looks good only think that is slowing me down is the H1b visa. I would be greatful if you could kindly send me more information on recruiters and hospitals etc? My aim is to got for California where I have family? do you still have a home in England?
