KaisonX
three letter from professor in US, two are very strong, one might be strong. and one professor was from NYU.
possible_phd
780 is definitely on the low end for finance, but you are certainly not out of the running -- especially with strong recommendations! Good luck.
UnknownPhD
a recommender from NYU? Same school as .... But i guess we're in different school cause i'm in private. Some schools accept GRE, though most of them prefer GMAT. good luck.
KaisonX
i know 780 is too low, so which school should I apply? my professor let me focus on the schools which is ranked around 20. any advice?
UnknownPhD
Then follow your professor's input. His or her advice is the best one to follow. If he/she says top 20 around, then that is for you to go ahead. I wish I could have a professor like the one you have. Is s/he the one from NYU? What is s/he? Assistant, associate, or tenured professor?
KaisonX
Yes, he is a tenured professor in my school. he also let try a shot in top 10, like NYU or Columbia, but I believe it would be extremely hard. maybe I should focus on 20 to

Journal of Finance
NYU Stern Finance Professor or NYU ECON professor? This matters in Finance application. Finance people only know finance professors. Finance professors even cannot speak out the name of Nobel Economics Winner in 2006. If NYU Finance professor says sth strong in his or her letter, then you chance will be significantly improved.
darcie
780Q might impede the first round process
doctoraldude
incidentally, what's the view on tenured strategy profs writing reco's for an org theory applicant?
possible_phd
I'm not sure if it really matters what field the referees come from. I mean, obviously a prof from the same field stands a higher likelihood of being known by the admissions committees and thus might improve your chances; however, given that so many people enter doctoral business programs from completely unrelated fields (e.g., engineering, physics, etc.), I doubt many of their references are in the same field for which they're applying. I think it's safe to say that it won't count against you, as long as the LOR clearly addresses your research potential. As a data point, only one of my three LOR writers is in marketing, but I've already been contacted for interviews by two marketing programs. Your mileage may vary. doctoraldude
hmm ... makes a lot of sense; though i wonder if it can be a disadvantage is ur recommender and the app-reviewer belong to conflicting schools of thought - say, austrian econ vs. keynesian econ ? KaisonX
Although he is a finance professor, but I think I should give up top 10. now I choose some schools around 20, the topest one is Rochester which I believe is tough but because I dont need to pay application fee, so try a shot on Rochester. Basely, after doing some research, I believe I am in the 20 to 30 range.
KaisonX
I am looking forward to attending U of Illinois at UC or Washington U at Saint Louis. Can my profile strong enough to get in these two? please give me some suggestions. Thanks
KaisonX
of course, Rochester is the best one
possible_phd
If you want a ballpark estimate of your chances based solely on your numbers, look at the schools' websites and their posted averages. At the end of the day, the only way to know your chances of admission is to apply.

I am quite sure I can get into UC-Irvine, because a professor from there strongly recommend me. but I hope I can get into higher ranked schools. any suggestions? thanks
KaisonX
I suppose my reply is failure, so I restate again. yeah, I think I should try. Thanks guys.
Journal of Finance
If the NYU professor let you have a shot at Top 10, maybe you should try. Do you just attend his class or have some research with him?
KaisonX
just have a class with him. I give up because I dont want to waste my application fee. moreover, although strongly recommend, one of my finance professor can only write 5 or 6 recommendation letters for me because of busy in research. I dont have many choices to try. and I would apply 2 or 3 in top 20, 2 in top 30, 1 in top 50, and the last back-up school in around 70. Now I also apply for PhD in Economics, there are more chances which I can apply for 10 schools. but frankly, I am willing to pursue PhD in Finance.
