Hi guys, Please evaluate my profile for admission into PHD in accounting and let me know what u think about it:
Program: Accounting (Auditing) Age: 26 Sex: Male Nationality: Colombian GMAT: 710, 93% - 48Q (85%), 40V (89%), 5.0 AWA. (it was hard, because sometimes i got lost in translations) ![]() Undergrad: I got graduated from a top 3 Colombian University (private) in Accounting and International finance, and took some courses from Business Grad: Right now I'm a MBA student from the National University of Colombia. Work experience (as unimportant as it is): Right now 2 years in a Top four audit firm, as auditor in financial institutions (Treasury operations) Teaching experience: none, but i was a TA in accounting I & II (helping the class b4 the terms) Research experience: I did a research (thesis) to obtain my bachelor degree, it was about the sarbanex Oxley law and the effects in the Colombian accounting practice. In six moths i will start my MBA thesis, and it will be about the use of financial instruments in small companies and the effects in the financial statements (just few companies know about them) letter of reference: the dean from the accounting faculty from my undergrad school, another professor from the finance dept. from the same school, and probably i will ask the letter of reference to 2 prof. from my MBA school. Research interests: Auditing and some topics of financial and managerial accounting. Schools in consideration: many, but mainly UChigago, LBS, USC, UToronto, NYU, Columbia, PennState, even Yale , MIT , and so on.Hope to hear from you. It seems like you have all the necessary background. I'm not applying accounting but I think from what I've heard you should probably consider applying to a couple in the 30-50 range in addition to the top schools you listed. All the schools you listed seem to be in the top couple of tiers, although like I said, I'm not going for accounting so I'm not sure.

I think you would be a strong candidate, although I do agree with the above. Your list of schools consists of all the top programs - nothing wrong with that, but you should try to find some lower tier schools with profs whose research interests you and apply to a handful of those, as well.

A good place to start is to get a list of the US states and look up anything that is the "University of ____ (Insert State Name)".
For example: University of Kansas, University of Iowa, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, etc. etc. etc. Go to those schools' websites and look at the biographies of their faculties and find schools with profs who you find interesting. EDIT: Some "University of ___" ARE top schools, for example the U of Texas or U of Michigan. |
