Conference AoM
Hello every supposedly now-admitted PhD student in Business,
I was wondering if any of you was going to attend the following pre-conference/consortium which takes places before the Annual AoM conference in Chicago (this year in August): AOM NDSC - New Doctoral Student Consortium - Home Moreover, what do future students involved with Management (incl. Strategy, OB, ...) think about attending this even before having started the PhD? Is it a good opportunity to meet people from other universities, to interact with your fellow PhD students in Management? Or is it still too early and not worth spending money on this? Last question... shouldn't it be more interesting then to attend the whole conference? Thanks all for your input, comments, feedback ! |

I think the NDSC will give you a good flavor of what to expect. But you can get the same by talking to people in the program that you are admitted to.
The conference is good for people who are applying - networking and info gathering. Attending the whole conference - will be good if there are specific sessions that you are interested in. Some of the PDWs might also be of interest.

If there is no money issue (the admission is cheap, 80 bucks or so I believe, so it's mostly a travel issue), then of course it is a good place to know people. This is a relatively small community (compared to other discipline), knowing the right people can make your career that much easier.

As I've mentioned on another thread, I will be attending AOM, and have secure a one-week sublease of a two-bedroom apartment with a local only a few blocks away from the conference, so if anybody is attending and looking for cheap, nearby accommodations, please let me know. It'd be about $500 for the week of 08/05-08/12 (taking some time to explore some of the schools up there), but willing to negotiate a nightly split if you're not staying that entire time. Let me know if you're interested! Also, shoot me a PM if you'd like to meet to talk! I'm a prospective PhD student, and I'm trying to meet with as many people in field as I can!
