Question Strategy PhD ???

Hello all,

I am trying to find a list of PhD programs in Strategy? Which schools in the U.S. offer a PhD in this field? Are there any resources & web sites you think can help me with my search?

Thanks to all of you for your help.

thank you for your candid response. so far i have discovered that schools such as ucla, mit, duke, michigan, northwestern have good strategy programs. but i fear that those schools might be out of my reach, so i was trying to find some tier 2 or tier 3 schools to focus on. do you have any ideas on this regard?

thanks again and best of luck to you.

I'm in a similar boat to the OP in that I'm not sure where to find a good ranking system for particular disciplines within business, e.g. strategy. How would one go about finding this sort of information?

possible_phd is on the way!
One wouldn't; there are no legitimate PhD rankings.

PhD programs are difficult from the very start -- it's a pain in the arse just to decide where to apply!

I would think the list provided above not necessarily reflect a strong strategy PhD program. It is likely a strong business school overall instead.

IMHO, top strategy departments are:
Duke,
Wharton,
Harvard,
MIT,
Michigan,
U Toronto,
Stanford (in engineering school, oddly enough)

decent/great departments are:
Illinois,
Maryland,
Purdue,
UT Austin,
Minnesota
etc...

Berkeley, UCLA, are still "name brand," but have slowed down quite a bit as their top stars are near retirement age (Williamson, Teece at Cal, Rumelt at UCLA). Still manage to place their students in good departments, but publication counts are way down compared to before.

hey was just wondering about MIT Sloan's strategic management program: they only have a minor in business. what major do you recommend for having the greatest exposure to strategy? Eventually organization studies or entrepreneurship? Areas of Study - MIT Sloan PhD Program

thanks

PS: this ranking here pretty much reflects the research performance: http://som.utdallas.edu/top100Rankin...anking.php?t=w

I am not quite sure I understand the question. Clearly strategy is under the major of Behavioral & Policy Sciences, so if you want to focus in organization studies, or entrepreneurship, this is the only applicable major.

MIT's grouping is a bit "non-standard," which is typical for the entire university. The best approach is to look at the faculty members' research and determine what fits best. My impression of the MIT people is that they don't necessarily enforce group boundary anyways. Have seen a few people from MIT who end up doing research cross boundary. But as far as admission is concerned, perhaps it's best to find the best match with your research interests.

At MIT, strategy has just been officially incorporated into the Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship group, making it TIES. The Economic Sociology group is also a place where there is a lot of "strategy-type" research, as is System Dynamics. Boundaries are fairly porous, however, as Moomber says.
