I know of a few students who got into top PhD schools from undergrad. Those students were OUTSTANDING and were at par with students with advanced graduate degrees. The average age for a PhD Finance is usually 25-26 as the adcoms want a significant level of maturity. It is common in engineering and other programs to have several young students doing PhD but not usually in Finance.

So based upon your experience and apart from Europeon and Canadian programs which programs I should consider in United States?

Thank you very much. I can see that acceptance rate is extremely competitive but this spreadsheet doesn't say anything about that what was the previous degree of admitted candidates.

    This one is epic.

A bit of keyword search never hurt anyone.

Some of it is PhD Economics but it should still give you a good idea for PhD Finance in terms of competition.

    Dear capital_structure:

Thank you very much for providing all those posts. I don't see many Wharton acceptances? What they are looking for? Just out of curiosity, what kind of profile will be sure hit for Wharton?
    -MSc Mathematics
    -MSc Economics
-An earned PhD in economics from Clark University, MA
-Published Articles in Top financial journal
    -3 years of research experience
-All three recemondation letter from Nobel prize Winner economists
    -790 GMAT
    -GRE 1550 (Quant 800 and Verbal 750)
    -Great SOP

Will above profile ensure acceptance at Wharton if true? I want to know the level which is ideal for Wharton AdComm in a PhD applicant?

    Lol I don't know. Ask Wharton Ad-Comm.

I wouldn't mind even one rec from even a Nobel Prize nominee.

Here is a profile of a student who is in his final year of PhD Finance at Wharton.

M.A. in Finance, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, 2007
M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2003
B.Tech. (President of India Gold Medalist - for the highest GPA among all graduating students) in
Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, 2001.

These are the patents registered for him in his engineering/finance career of 5 years before entering Wharton PhD Finance.

Inventor of US Patent US6807159, European Patent EP1202495, Japanese Patent JP3721115, German
Patent DE60110184, Chinese patent CN1319298 and Austrian Patent AT293859. Patent Assignee
is International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, Armonk, NY. Patents on methodology
for managing power consumption in a master driven time division duplex wireless network.

He had 9 publications in Engineering/Computer Science before PhD Finance.

This should give you an idea?

I think that alone would have got him admission anywhere. He was basically one of the top 20 students of India in 2001. Probably among top 20 in the world also. Thats among 1+ billion population of India. Just Insane.

I agree with you completely about the difficulty and amazing profiles of candidates. But I think your sample is kind of exception. This candidate my seem like a overqualified technology person who switched his career to finance/economics at certain point and that's why number of degrees etc got higher and as a result of that he has some extra feathers in his cap. Majority of Wharton PhD candidates don't have any patent or anythink like that. look at these samples:
    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/doctoral/community/meet_people/profiles.cfm?pname=liu
    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/doctoral/community/meet_people/profiles.cfm?pname=glac
    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/doctoral/community/meet_people/profiles.cfm?pname=gupta
    http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/doctoral/community/meet_people/profiles.cfm?pname=ray

The most common thing among these doctoral students is a reputed MBA program whether it is from IIM of India or London School of Economics, UK
Other than that, many have economics as thier previous major.

    Hi Yanagi

First of all, congrat on your admission.
Would you mind to share your accounting PHD admission experience? I have also applied PHD accounting but still have not heard anything, I'm just waiting for my rejections now as i know by this time this is all I can expect. So which schools did you receive offers from? Did you get an interview? When did you received your offers?

    Thanks
