Middle of the Road Profile or better?
Well, Im sorta chaning my plans at the moment, but heres what I got:
-4.0 GPA at little virginia school -Lots of random acadenic awards (best of which = valedictorian) -720 math, 650 verbal GRE -Some minor teaching experience -All the normal calc and stats and linear math -Getting close to being a CPA -3.5 years of experience in accounting Kinda middle of the road compared to some of the guys here, but Im wondering if I can make it into any accounting PHD? Im not looking for the best fo the best, Im looking for what I call "Academic Peace" ![]() Do I have a shot anywhere? thanks guys. |

Definitely not a stand-out, if you're looking at the best programs, but you should be in contention if you select your programs correctly. A higher Quant score would be nice, so it might be worth addressing that, but your 4.0 GPA will shine, in particular with the math classes - this should help to compensate for the 720Q. Where you get in really will depend on your story and your references. With A+ references, you stand a chance at the best programs (much like any one with A+ references) - it's really hard to provide solid feedback without knowing about the quality/calibur of the references.
Anyhow, good luck! |

Well, A+ refs I do have since I was the star at my old school, and am still going to lunch with the chancellor since I still live near the school. One Middle to upper middle school has given me a fee waver to their program (they didnt have the funds to fund the Acct program this year). Mabey Im beating myself up too much. Any sugestions of east coast schools that might be good for me? |

Two middle of the road accounting PhD programs on the east coast that may be of interest to you depeding on research are... UMass - for audit UConn - for tax, they have George Plesko, Amy Dunbar, and John Phillips who are all solid tax folks. It is hard to find schools with three research active tax faculty |

Let me recommend Temple, GWU, USF (good program, doesn't draw many applicants), South Carolina, Georgia State, and UCF (Central Florida)
The Gulf Coast also has LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi, and UHouston. |

I would recommend taking the GMAT. GRE is accepted for accounting programs, but it is not as widely accepted as the GMAT. (Note, this is different for other business phds disciplines) Did you do all the calculus, stats, and linear math courses for an accounting degree or that were offered at your school? Ever taken economic classes? I think your resume looks pretty good for what you want to do. I would recommend tax if you are ambivalent. While there is a shortage of audit professors, the shortage of tax professors is going to get worse much faster for the reason already mentioned. (Phd programs aren't training tax professors)

Like phdhope, I suggest you take the GMAT.
I think the range of schools you'd be interested in for accounting usually receive GMATs from applicants and thus it would be harder to evaluate you based on a GRE score. Many schools actually require the GMAT for accounting. |
