The total GRE score does not matter, it is the breakdown between the verbal, quant and AWA sections that matters. For the verbal it varies from program to program and it also depends on whether you are a native english speaker or not. Generally, a native english speaker would be expected to get >=450 on the verbal, and should be >=550. If you are not a native english speaker and have to take the Toefl, then your GRE verbal will probably be ignored in favor of the Toefl. Beyond that finance PhD programs don't care much about the verbal score though obviously a higher score is better than a lower score. For the AWA, a native english speaker is expected to get >=3.5, and preferably >=4.5 while for non native speakers it will probably be ignored for the Toefl. For the quant, top 20 programs will expect >=780 (or for some schools 790), mid ranked programs will probably expect >=750 and all programs will probably expect >=700. Also, there are a number of finance PhD programs that only accept the GMAT.

I know for sure that CUNY-Baruch and UConn finance only accept GMAT, and I know I have seen others, though I can't remember any others at the current moment.

I have Masters degree in Finance from Florida International University. My GPA is 3.58 . I do not need to take the TOEFL exam because i have a Masters degree from USA. I only plan to apply to universities that accepts GRE. By the way i am not a native speaker. I wonder my chances of getting admitted to universities ( 50-100 ,100 -200) for phd with the GRE verbal score of 400 and quantitative score of 780.

Agreed- I think many do these days. I see a decent number of b-schools that "accept the GRE but prefer/heavily prefer the GMAT." Some don't even say on their website, they just talk about GMAT. But if you contact them, a lot of times they will say, "well, we like you to have the GMAT, but we'll take the GRE." GRE is becoming much more accepted than it used to be, which is good for us GRE takers who don't want to take another standardized test.

There are about 90-100 finance PhD programs in the US. One list that I linked to in a recent thread listed 91. A 400 V for a non-Toefl taker is not great, even though you are not a native english speaker. Try to get it closer to 500 or maybe take the Toefl if you think you will do well even if you are exempt (though being an American, I am not sure how universities will look at it if you take even though you are exempt). Without knowing your specific math courses taken with grades, I can't give you an idea on top 30 schools, but assuming you have the bare minimum of calc III, linear algebra and econometrics or math stats all with a grade of B+ or better, you should have a decent shot at top 60 schools especially if you could get the GRE V above 500. Maybe you could give us your full profile like others have done in similar threads in the past.

I want to know my changes of getting admissions to phd programs to between top 100 to 200 universities with around 100 points of toefl ibt over 120 and verbal score of 400 and quantatitave score of 800.. Any ideas ???
