Household finance in finance PhDs?
Does anyone know of any finance programs (any tier) that have a personal/household finance bent? I realize that this subfield is probably not going to be a major focus... but perhaps a program that has some coursework available? I know Souleles and Mitchell are both at Wharton, and teach in Finance and Applied econ.
Thanks! |

If you really have a personal/household finance interest then you should consider Consumer Economcis programs that have that concentration. The programs are basically applied micro to household consumption and decision making. There aren't a whole lot of programs but here are the ones I know of that are in line with that area of study: Ohio St, Texas Tech, Georgia, Missouri, Purdue, Wisconsin, UIUC, Va Tech. The programs fall under different names and departments so you may have to search some (ie Family Resource Mgmt, Personal Financial Planning, Consumer Econ, Applied Econ).
I think doing one of these programs will make it tough to get a good placement in the future. Your best bet is to get a Finance PhD at one of those schools and try to take the personal/household courses as electives. |
