Management PhD urgent advice needed.
Hello everyone,
I need your input with regards to industry career options after PhD in Management or Strategy. I know that PhD is for academia but very so often many people get frustrated and enter the industry... Finance PhD's have a easy route going into finance industry but what about PhD's in Management or Strategy or Entrepreneurship? Is there any exit opportunity for these guys? Do management consulting firms, PE/VC shops or any other sectors of the industry actively even look at them as employable? Would a PhD from Ivy school or top 25 mgmt departments have better exit opportunities versus mgmt PhD's from state schools or second tier schools? Or can Mgmt PhD's be hired as quants, which sounds very unlikely! Please let me know any personal experience or information if you have. Thank you. |

In my (limited) personal experience you should do a PhD in Strategy ONLY if you wanted to enter academia. Firstly it is unlikely that you would get into the program into the first place is you said that you wanted to do management consulting. Secondly, the program is long and you would make much more progress if you had 5 years of industry experience. An MBA is an obvious choice if you want to go into consulting.

Ditto to what figuringout just said. I really don't see why you would consider a phd if you are thinking of going into industry. It is a course some people take, but I would argue that it is not the best course to get into industry. Most people that do that I think didn't realize that they didn't like phd programs but didn't want to quit.

I always thought PhD industry jobs would require longer, inflexible hours and more grunt work anyways -- don't see how it would be an 'easy way out' unless your only goal would be to work for MIT or something and you found you couldn't publish to their expectations.
...industry might pay a bit more, but I don't think a PhD would be the best route if that's your ultimate goal. |
