To get the rankings of univs in financial archival, I gave a query in byuaccounting (Finan_Archi Accounting Phd Program Research Rank by BYU). The rankings do not make a lot of sense. For instance, Yale is behind Tilburg etc. So, is the case with Harvard, Kellogg and other univs who are way down in the rankings. This makes me question the authenticity of this rankings. Can someone shed light on what would be top 10 univs in financial archival? Thanks. GRADUATES OF THE INSTITUTION in the last 9 years and "All" rankings related to publications since 1990. "3 Year" and "6 Year" represent the size of the post-graduation window in which we count graduate's publications. You may sort this table by any of the columns. You may also click on a University Name to see all rankings related to that university, and the contributing graduate authors." So by my read, the ranking system is based upon each universities total number of graduates and their respective productivity in research since 1990. The windows are saying, for example, within 3 years of graduation, how many publications each graduate achieved, likewise for 6- and 9-year windows. Other rankings often examine the productivity of each individual department (opposed to this one, which ranks by the pubs achieved by graduates in a given time). A question I have that I do not see by glancing at the website is, which journals they take into consideration. I would not discount this ranking completely, however it gives a base overview of how productive graduates of each respective program are OVERALL. The big limiting factor is that it seems to be a raw count variable, i.e. assuming they found ALL of each institutions graduates in that specific field. It does not seem to control for number of graduates each school puts out in total. In other words, if a school graduates 20 students an year in a given discipline, it may disproportion their values, relative to a school that only graduates 3 an year. That being said, all ranking systems are not perfect and each have their own methodological issues. Consider how they calculate the rankings in your own assessment. Raw count does have limitations as noted by tm_associate. However, I would argue that you would probably want to look at schools that have very productive research active faculty. Looking at PhD students research productivity in the first couple of years out of the program is a hard way to judge the quality of the phd program. I would first look to see if they have good professors at the school and then look to see evidence that the professors work or have worked with phd students in the past. I would also argue that a larger faculty is better for students, so rankings shouldn't necessarily be reduced for large faculty schools. You can also custom rank programs. I would do this and limit it to top journals if you are interested. You will come away with some surprises like Harvard and Kellogg not being as high as their MBA programs. But then look at Kellogg's analytical research rankings if you want to see where their strengths are. Something like this is definitely better than using MBA rankings to proxy for PhD rankings, and it allows you to look at what you are really interested in. Keep in mind that this is all of financial archival. If you have a sub-category that you are interested in, you will have to look through papers to see where some professors are.
