I would say that risk is pretty low. Generally, someone isn't going to tell you that they are going to make you an offer without essentially having the authority to do so. They may need permission from the department chair and maybe even the dean of the business school, but those things should happen if a tenured professor on the PhD committee is recommending you for admission.

I was thinking about writing to the schools and asked about the interview results. Can I say, "I was wondering if I could know my status after the interview two weeks ago"? or something else that is more appropriate. Thank you!

Have you been to Chapel Hill yet to visit the school/city?

I'm also considering UNC - what is your take on the business school's reputation in general within academia? Thanks a lot.

From a reputation (not academia but MBA) perspective, three of my friends did their MBA there, oddly enough in the same year, and well placed in the industry. And had great things to say about their time there.

@YaSvoboden Thanks for that. For a minute started worrying too much.

I needed to hear that too. Thanks. I got an unofficial offer from the school I would like to go to one week ago but have not received anything official yet. They basically said they are still trying to figure out my funding. So that may be the only risk as long as there is no "official" offer? You really have no guarantee for funding even if they agreed to accept you.

@Poble ... what is your situation with your unofficial offers now?

My first official offer was in my inbox the Monday after my visit. (visit was on Friday the week before). They were super fast, but all other schools seem to take their time.
It is true that it would make absolutely no sense for someone to tell you (unofficially) per email that you are accepted and then back out. That would reflect very poorly on the school. They can't make an unofficial offer unless you have really been accepted by the department.
