Xixixixixixi
Hi fellas! Thrilled to post my first thread in the forum. I heard from past applicants that some programs don't admit students every year. Maybe they'll close this year and reopen the next year. Is this a common or uncommon practice? I plan to apply for accounting programs, and I wonder if it's necessary to email every target school whether they admit students for accounting ph.d programs this year? YaSvoboden
Very uncommon. If applications are open they should be taking students
Xixixixixixi
Thanks. As I browsed the top 70 program (I referred to BYU ranking) pages, I just saw one school stating they don't open this year on the website and then University of South Carolina sent me an email saying they don't anticipate any students for accounting this year. So that's 2 out of 70 and I guess it's really uncommon... Just wanted to make sure if there's schools that might not indicate that info on the website, coz I don't wanna waste my time and money on schools which don't admit students at all. Then I guess no need to write to programs about that?
YaSvoboden
I don't see a need to ask every program. I also don't see it hurting if you want to make sure. In my years of reading on this forum I recall one time that a school accepted applications and then decided not to admit anyone. Definitely an anomaly though. So, yeah, no real need to worry about it.

XanthusARES
Yep when I was applying I applied to George Washington. They decided in February to not take anyone and they refunded our application fees. In general a school will let you know either via their website or through an email that they aren't accepting applicants, if they aren't accepting applicants. Most of them, if they have an open application will accept one.
Xixixixixixi
wow. It's good if they do a refund. Thank you for the advice!
jebediahjones
It seems to be more common for universities to move to a bi-annual admittance (likely to reduce costs), typically on odd-years, but occasionally I hear about even-year entries. I'm hearing more as of late about Ph.D. programs scaling back due to how expensive they are to run.
