If you wrote a thesis and did research there, then you have a really good chance at most of the top schools.

You are probably thinking of Phelim Boyle, a pioneer in the field of monte carlo methods for derivatives pricing. Unfortunately, he retired and no longer teaches at Waterloo.

That's right; it's a big loss to Waterloo and a huge gain to Wilfrid Laurier University where he's directing a new PhD in Financial Economics program.
