Ph. D. Marketing

Anyone else taking this route? I've seen several for finance or econ, but nothing really for marketing. I'd love to hear about your experience so far. I'm applying to some top 20 programs. Nothing of note to report yet.

Thanks.

I'm not positive yet but I am giving it a lot of thought (probably about 70% sure that I will apply). I am currently pursuing a master's degree in Marketing Analytics part-time and working for a small Market Research firm.

One major stipulation is that if I do pursue the degree, I will be doing so in Massachusetts, Connecticut or possibly New York. Also, I would probably return to the private sector instead of academia upon completing the degree.

What are your plans and what areas of marketing are you interested in? What resources have you found most useful in learning about each school's program?

I have particular interest in International Marketing, Social Marketing, Entrepreneurial Marketing, and Sports Marketing. I really would like to take a path that combines international and entrepreneurial marketing - but who knows what I'll actually end up with. I'm applying pretty much on the east coast, MA, CT, PA, and NC, and TX. All states are relatively close to family and offer good options.

I am leaning heavily toward academia, but definitely have the private sector in the back of my mind. I think, I ideally, I would take the academic route and have a small family business to satisfy my profiteering side.

I've found the AMA to be incredibly helpful - and even if you arent' a member, they have a great section under academic resources/careers that, if you navigate through properly, you can get to good info on program requirements, admissions stats, and rankings. Let me know if you are interested and I'll scrounge up some specific links for you.

When would you look to begin a phd program?

I have spent a good deal of time looking through the AMA website and some of the links, such as the USC Marketing Phd FAQ and Dr. Lage's rankings and have found them useful but nothing that really distinguishes the research focus of one program from the next.

I'm wondering how one determines the difference in Marketing Phd programs from one school to the next. Does MIT excel at modeling and other quant heavy research in the IT sectors while others have a softer focus in different industries? Did you go through the faculty pages find their publications and then read all of them for programs you were interested in? Another related question, is how do you tailor your statement of purpose to a particular school?

Personally, I am really interested in research and statistics in a Marketing context. More specifically I would like to understand how past experiences (nature vs. nurture) impact buying behavior. The industries I would focus on would be High Tech, Automotive, and Sports.

The plan right now is to take the next couple months evaluating Harvard, Yale, MIT, BU, and UConn's programs, line up my recommendations and apply in the fall to begin in '08. I'm in the middle of completing a Master's in Marketing Analytics at Bentley (at night) and should complete in the Spring of '08.

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have found it most useful (re: finding research specialties) to go to the school's site and look at the faculty bio's/personal pages. It's a little time consuming and tedious - but probably worth while, and you have time as you are looking at '08. Great job getting such a head start. Others may chime in as well and share what they know about individual school's.

I'm not aware of a general listing or index of specialties, but would love to hear if someone finds one.

Good luck. Please post here if you find something.
