Requirement

Hi folks,

Most of the schools ask for a 3.5 graduate GPA. How serious they are about this? Some schools are really really tough; I am doing my MBA at U of Toronto now. I see that it is difficult to get 3.5 .... but I want a Phd in Information Technology or Econ... any hope for me. I don't care about top programs. Any schools (AACSB) in USA will work for me.

Thanks

I'm speaking for PhD in IT/IS. From what I see, most schools do not require graduate degrees from their applicants. However, for applicants with graduate degrees, the schools place heavier emphasis on applicants' graduate GPA than undergraduate GPA. And many applicants to the higher ranked programs have graduate GPA of 3.8, 3.9.

Generally, you need to have strengths in other areas to offset, say, lower GPA. E.g. if you can get higher GMAT and strong LORs, your lower GPA may not be too much of a problem.

i believe gpa is a very relative matter. if u rank in the top 5-10% in ur class at u of t, that's pretty good for the progs u r looking for. however, if ur rank is lower then u may have to search for promising research interest, gmat score and lors. best

It also depends on how much the grades are inflated. A lot of US MBA programs inflate their grades and so do bachelor honor programs. If U of T doesn't inflate their grades, have your recommenders mention it.
