Any idea about University of Alberba's Finance?
Hi,
How would you evaluate Alberta's Finance PhD program? In Canada and North America? Prof. Morck is there but.............. Do you consider it as one of the top 3 in Canada? Waiting for feedback. |

I would not rank U of A's program in the top three. I would say that U of T, Queen's, York, UBC, UWO, Mcgill, and maybe U of Calgary (they are are starting to increase the quality of their program) would all be better options.
Also, I did an Engineering degree at U of A. Last edited by EE570 : 04-07-2007 at 06:46 AM. |

if u look into research output of Canadian universities, then Mcgill and Alberta are the same. And York, UWO, Queens and U of Calgary lie far behind!! This is how I ranked universities before applying. Can you tell me how you have rank ed those programs?

I did not use any particular ranking method, though I suppose I should have if I was going to post my opinion. But you can have a look at U of A's placements then look at the placements of the others.
Also, I am slightly biased towards asset pricing/ risk management/ derivatives so that may have influenced me somewhat. Can you provide the link you used that provided research output. All the best |

I got ur point. For asset pricing, U of T is the best. However, i recommend you to rethink on York and Queens (and of course, U of Calgary). Queens is really good in economics but finance dept there is.................... Same reasoning goes for York. Both of them have good MBA programs but that does not mean a thing to potential finance PhD students, i hope.
You can look into ASU's website to get info on ranking. Given you have an MS in EE, I think you have a good chance at the best schools in Canada! Best, Walid |

Fair enough, I am just somewhat hesitant to give U of A the nod ahead of York or Queens, but you may be right about U of C, all though U of C has two top publications in the pipe (from Alexander David).
Again I am biased, and I probably would attend the other institutions before U of A if given admissions to each place. However, I am aware that different institutions appeal to different people and I am not trying to take anything away from U of A. Are you going to U of A? Oh, I don't have an MS in EE, I have a BSc in EE and a BSc in Applied Math and will have a MSc(research based) in Applied Math with a Financial Mathematics focus. I will be attending (accepted the offer the other day) a PhD Finance program in Canada in the Fall. Feel free to PM if you would like. Cheers. |

Hi guys,
I think U of A's PhD stands for sure after U of T , UBC and Mcgill and maybe Queens! I have an MSC in Engineering From U of A and also an MSc in Finance from Sauder (UBC). I have turned down U of A's PhD offer 2 weeks ago. Dr. Mork is amazing though; if you are interested in Corporate Finance they have got an OK team. (I don't know why Prof. Mork is still at U of A!)lol EE 570 may I ask which School you have picked? I have accepted a Canadian School's PhD offer for next year as well. Good luck guys! |
