phd finance/eco - prep advice...can a CFA help

hey guys...i wonder if passing level III CFA would help in admissions for a top phd program in finance/economics...i already have an MBA and an engineering degree (from top univs in my country) and a work ex of 3 years ...though my work ex is not in finance but more into sectoral research...

am prepared to spend time passing the level III if it would bolster my chances...any other prep tips ...

i think your engineering background would better serve for getting a Ph.D. admission in finance. to strengthen your profile, you may write the CFA level III. Admissions at the top schools are quite random. After talking to several profs, I got an idea that every year more than 500 applicants apply to any top program. They make an initial list of 20-30 potential applicants. And it really matters on your interview and more importantly luck..........
Write a good SOP. If your application is at the edge, they might consider reading your SOP over and over........
best,
