I completely agree, the comment was out of line in my opinion. Where people ask for opinions about schools you can give them to them (for instance is someone wanted some general rankings) but this is a results thread meant to display your achievements. Tilburg is a great school and getting into any PhD Finance program as stated many times before is quite an achievement.

Taken more math classes. The professor I worked for had gone to NYU and was friendly with the director of the PhD program there. He asked why I was not accepted and was told that it was because of my relatively weak undergrad training in math (in particular no real analysis and no differential equations). I just didn’t realize I wanted to do a PhD (was planning on going into industry) until my junior year so there wasn’t much time to take more math classes.

Being familiar with statistical computer programming (e.g. SAS or Stata) also would have made the first year in my program easier.

I wonder why you chose Emory over Ohio State? What's attracting for you in school?

Yes, it was a tough decision. I think overall OSU is better, their corporate finance program is much stronger.

However, I knew I wanted to do something empirical asset pricing related, and I think the two schools are of pretty similar quality in that area. Jay and Jegadeesh are both great researchers and Jay, in particular, has had a lot of success placing students (e.g. Jonathan Lewellen). Since I thought my placement potential was pretty similar at both schools, non-academic factors made me lean towards Emory. I liked the city of Atlanta more than Columbus and especially like the warm weather. I liked their campus and the PhD facilities and the stipend was also a bit more generous.
