PHD or DBA programs for entrepreneurship...

Hello, everyone. I am interested in getting a PHD in entrepreneurship (or something similar) and am wondering if you guys have any programs you highly recommend. I want to teach creative small business strategies in an academic environment.

I have a rather goofy background. I have not worked for any large companies.

GRE: Quant- 800 Verbal - 740
I aleady have an MBA (GPA-3.85)
I have a BA in sports psychology and have taken numerous science and mathematics courses including physics, calculus I & II, chemistry, anatomy, physiology etc.

I have 6 years of very successful small business experience selling office furniture products directly to the federal government. I work as the Director of Sales and Marketing strategy. 90% of the business I do is through the Internet.

I have had 3 years of experience as a gold level PowerSeller on eBay (meaning that I was importing and selling over a million dollars worth of product on eBay each year).

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

University of Washington at Seattle has such a program. The Sloan School at MIT has a program in Technology & Entrepreneurship or something to that effect which you may find useful. Can't think of too many other places which have something specific on entrepreneurship. You should consider applying to the management concentration/ strategy concentration at other schools and say that you are interested in entrepreneurship.

Thanks for your response, desimba. I think what you wrote makes a lot of sense. I recently learned that most PHD programs in business management are free and then when you teach you can work at renowned universities and teach. Is this true? This career would be very fun for me and is exactly what I'm interested in. I'm finding the real business world too cut throat for my personality.

Is this true and are your interests at all similar? What are your aspirations?

Thanks,

Ramin

Well. It is true that almost all of the programs in business are free in the sense that you do not have to pay tuition and will almost always have funding for the first four years of the program. Once you graduate from the program though getting in as a faculty at a business school is not always very easy as there are more graduates than faculty positions at research universities. The situation is a lot better than economics for instance, where my prof mentioned that they had received 300 applications for 2 positions but even in marketing (which is where this prof was from), there were 25 applicants for those 2 positions. So bottomline is that pursuing a PhD can certainly be a very fulfilling experience, but you will have to work hard to turn it into a success.

My 2 cents.
Best of luck,
SB

The number of applicants for any given job opening does not seem to be a reasonable measure of people fighting for a particular position (at least from what I am hearing from those on the market this year). It seems to be that applicants will send up to, if not more then 100 applications, which causes a large number of applications per job opening. But there may be far fewer who are truly interested in the position. In any case, it is true that finding a "good" academic position is never easy, but the outlook is fairly good for most biz school phd graduates.

GRE_K:

Since I have researched among similar lines as you have done (only thing, I am more interested in bringing IS and entrepreneurship together) heres what I found amongst such programs:

1. Harvard
2. MIT
3. Stanford
4. U Virginia (Darden)
5. CMU (Tepper)
6. Wharton
7. Stern

See, the programs will not especially be called entrepreneurship (for instance in Harvard it is known as technology and operations management) but you need to contact the faculty in the entreprenurship unit in each b school and talk to them directly (That has helped for me)
