I didn't know that finance phd programs were even more selective than econ phd, is it the same in accounting for example ? I'm more interested in corporate finance, and might go for an accounting phd. I saw some statistics for a few programs, but for most of them I have no clue about if they are more selective.
consider finance for corporate finance.. there are schools highly specialized on corporate finance ... accounting certainly has some overlapping but I still consider a phd in finance a better option.

Anyway I find accounting super boring, corporate finance slightly boring (especially studying things like the Miller Modigliani Theorem) ... maybe because I am an asset pricing guy.

For finance at least, at my country (thinking about a professorial position) McCombs v/s Goizueta would be a no-brainer. McCombs would strictly dominate in prestige. Maybe for other areas it is not so clear, though, at least for me.

But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire."

well, I dunno if it's worth, I would prefer to go for top 20 phd programs in accounting than a top 50 in finance
I know finance programs are hyper selective, that's why I'm reluctant to only try finance programs

btw Mc Combs and Emory, I might choose Mc Combs, but as I said, my point of view is really biased

for example, my father is a manager back in Europe... he deals with consulting companies where some of the partners got their mba in the US... he told me he never heard of people from Emory but he knows of McCombs... the fact is that the EMBA and MBA at Emory seem to be much better according to the ranking. So he is pushing for McCombs...

There is for sure a dimensionality mismatch.. I have been visiting both the places.. if Goizueta is a 6 story building with almost one hundread offices, Mccombs is a 2 buildings complex with six floors each.. and one more building is under construction just for the MBA side of the business school

Accounting at Emory.. I think they offered to 2-3 people.. Accounting at McCombs.. (the best in the US according to the departmental ranking) I see 4-5 people enrolled per year..
there is not so much difference... with admissions in finance.. I guess there are less applications for the accounting programs but that's not true for the top20 business schools.

Hey !!! I HAVE to defend accountng here...heheh.. I spent a fair bit of time in Investment-banking, earning pots of money but hating my job, eventually deciding finding my way to the Phd (accounting and not finance). To each their own I guess - I understand accounting bores you (I'm happy you know your mind) but many guys make decision based on what's selling more and some apply to multiple programs, eventually selecting schools rather that what fits them...Digressing from the main topic a bit - as a budding philosopher (ahem...), me thinks a lot has to do with the chase of trying to get to the top school, the top specialization, the top job...hehehe.

So, I sent in by acceptance a couple days back and I'm now officially on appartment hunting in Toronto !!

Peace...

I really assumed that there were way less applicants in accounting than in Finance, also, my background in math is light.

Live4today, where did you apply ? I agree with your way of thinking, and I share your point of view, that's the strategy I was thinking about.

Sorry to bother you on such a thing, but I would like to come back on the initial topic.

I finally went through the GMAT for the first time, I got a 680 (Q47,V37), at the lower end of what I expected. I did good at verbal (considering my usual scores, and as I'm a non native) but had to make a guess on the last 5 questions of the quant.
I think I can hardly make more than 700, but I can surely do better on quant (but do worst on the rest ! )

I will apply for 2 finance programs top 100, 2 accounting top 50, and maybe 3 accounting at the lower end of the top 20 (still thinking which one btw Cornell, Emory, Yale, Berkeley and a couple of others). Do you think such a score would jeopardize my chances in in the top 100/60/20 ? In this case I assume I should retake even if there are chances for me to get less ?

Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed
Thanks in advance

Some schools use 700 as a cut-off point. Your chances on some schools in top 50 might be slim. But for the top 100, you might try your chance in case most of them examine your application as a whole.
