Exclamation Do I need GRE or GMAT or GRE & GMAT for Finance Ph D?

Hello Guys,

I wanted to do a ph d in finance and more inclined to take GRE rather than GMAT, does most of the ph d in finance programs accept GRE or it's a must to have GMAT?

Undergrad: Information system; Grad: MBA finance.

Please advise.

According to university websites, most programs encourage applicants to take the GMAT, but will accept the GRE. Some programs will only accept the GRE though. I don't know of any programs that require both.

If we look top 50 Ph D Finance programs, approximately how many percentage of them take GRE? What I am trying to figure out is, If I have GRE and not GMAT, will my choices of programs that can apply will be reduced? Or If you already have a GRE, is it worthwhile to study ( it will be hard study if you want to get good number so it will hurt you just because you took it and got lower score) for GMAT just becasue some schools might accept just GMAT but not the GRE?

From what I have read on university websites, if you have the GRE, then you don't need to take the GMAT. But if you haven't taken the GRE, then take the GMAT. Also, look at the websites of the programs you want to apply to. They will answer whether or not the GRE is acceptable.

I dont know if I've been misreading things but it appears now that the GRE has become more acceptable. Am I the only one who's thinking this? I'm referring to the Finance/Business Economics programs

From what I've read most schools will accept either, without indicating which is more acceptable. And you are right, that there are some schools that require the GRE. However, I think more schools prefer the GMAT to the GRE than the other way around. Again, it depends on the program.

I do think you are right that the general trend is that the GRE is becoming more acceptable.

If somebody is preparing for Ph D in finance, let's discuss which one is better to take and why (studying for both is kind of waste of time, I think).

i just think you should go by what the school's website says because the programs vary in content and quality. Let's just leave it at that -cater to what the school wants and what your needs are.

For economics programs at business schools (such as Applied Economics at Wharton & Economics @ GSB, Chicago) and finance programs, also at business schools, the GRE is prefered over the GMAT. I cannot think of too many business school finance programs which do not accept the GMAT or even prefer the GMAT over the GRE. Now if you had been talking about marketing or IS then that would have been a different story but you are fine with GRE for finance.
