a word of encouragement
To testmagicans pursuing a PhD degree in business/management:
I used to participate in Testmagic forum to prepare GMAT & my application package. I am about to receive my PhD in business. Well, let's just say that my degree is NOT in finance or econ. A lot of you probably already applied to a number of B-schools, and some of you are just thinking about doing so in coming years. I was in your shoes only five years ago when I started applying to B-schools. I had doubts about going back to school because it meant spending 4-6 years of my life for an uncertain prospect of finding a job at the end. But I really wanted to have a faculty position because it would give me a chance to pursue the things that I like to do. Fortunately for me, I now have a tenure track faculty position with a high salary (higher than what I imagined when I first set foot in the grad school). I did work very hard to get this job, but during the grad school, not everything was going smoothly, and I frequently doubted my decision to come back to school because I honestly thought I could not get a faculty position. What I didn't realise was that there was a place for me in academia as a PhD in business. PhD programs in business schools can open doors to premium opportunities for you, especially because there continues to be excess nation-wide demand for business professors. (As opposed to engineering/science PhD programs). Moreove, business professors are probably one of the best paid academics. You think this is a cliche? That's what I thought five years ago. I know this career path isn't for everyone. But if you really wish to pursue an academic career with a high salary, then give it a good try. If you don't succeed on first try, then try again the next year. I really believe that PhD in business is an investment with a very high return. I hope you are successful in your endeavour, and I wish the best luck to all of you in your career. This forum is the best! spinon (I lost my previous username) |
