Do You Have To Go To A Top School?

I was just wondering if in order to land a solid academic position upon graduating with your Business PhD, you have to come from a top program? I'm more familiar with Economics PhDs, and in order for someone to land a solid position, they need to go to a great school. For example, in Economics pretty much anybody who teaches at a program who's graduate school is in the top 30 (and often times top 50) came from a top 10 program. Even when you look at the low ranked departments that offer a PhD you still see many people who come from MIT, Harvard, etc.

Are Business PhDs more or less the same story?

Yep, the most interesting thing though is, the highest number of top b school doctoral candidates being hired is by Singapore. They just have 3 universities but really good ones they are - NUS, NTU, SMU.

They are attracting this talent to increase quality perception. They offer huge salaries - far more than what other countries would offer AND not mention the fact that Singapore is an excellent place to stay/work in.

On average how strong of a PhD program do you think the faculty at a program like Washington State University went to? I notice on the ranking below, the program is 75th.

Well, in December, I was in an IEEE conference in Singapore and I went to each of the universities. Their funding offers to students are very good !! They are trying to emulate the US educational system.

So since the conference was only for 3 days and I was there for a week, I visited each of the universities. They were very cooperative. The reason was that one of the programs where I applied to this year has a professor who graduated from that same program in NTU. So, I went to ask questions about the program to the professor who was, also, incidentally, the editor of the screening committee.

He was present in one of the workshops which I attended and we got talking and discovered that I am pretty much interested in the same kind of research that he is. Now, this guy is young, about 29 and we ended up having lunch in Bugis Street. Ergo, you can imagine where I got the information from.

A full prof at NUS can easily land USD250K. This was like 2/3 years ago.

I remember a few years back there was an issue with some administrator guy from UCLA that NUS hired. Apparently, in order to attract him, they offered an extremely lucrative albeit controversial salary.

tkkoh, as asianecon mentions, and he is, in my opinion better placed to say, a full professor in NUS can make around that figure which he suggests.

Also, Singapore has a lower cost of living than most other places and from what I saw on my visit there, an excellent place to stay...

Does anybody know how strong of a program one would have to go to for their PhD in order to have a solid chance of landing a job at a university with a business program in the 50 - 100 range (US rankings)?
